Police collective bargaining approved, demolition ordinance discussed at city council

New business filled much of the regular biweekly meeting of the Rhinelander Common Council last Monday, Jan. 26. After hearing a presentation proposing the installation of a Safe Haven Baby Box at the Rhinelander Fire Department (detailed in the Northwoods River News Jan. 30 edition), the council turned to new business, which included a collective bargaining agreement between the city of Rhinelander and the Rhinelander Professional Police Association, Local 38 of Wisconsin Professional Police Association/Law Enforcement Employee Relations.

Installation of Baby Box proposed to city council

An innovation to help improve an anguishing situation was in the spotlight at the meeting of the Rhinelander Common Council Monday, Jan. 26. Oneida County foster parents Jenna Toms and Nicole Ziolkowski feel passionately that a Safe Haven Baby Box should be installed at the Rhinelander Fire Department. In a presentation prefaced by Rhinelander interim fire chief Adam Johnson, they explained what a Safe Haven Baby Box is and the cost and procedure to bring one to Rhinelander.

Trio of senior citizens charged with possession of fentanyl with intent to deliver

Sheriff’s report: Co-defendant purchased illegal substances from Chicago for approximately 10 years

Cash bond of $500,000 apiece for three Eagle River senior citizens has been set by Oneida County judge Mary Sowinski. Each is charged with one count of possession with intent to deliver more than 50 grams of Fentanyl. Barry Clure, 69, Susan Cody, 74, and Patrick Menting, 63, were arrested Jan. 17 after a traffic stop in the town of Monico for the expired registration of Clure’s vehicle.

Benefit line dance Feb. 1 to help area Special Olympians

Some fancy stepping for a fine cause awaits on Sunday, Feb. 1. In an innovative fundraiser for the School District of Rhinelander Special Olympics bowling team, a benefit line dance will fill a tuneful afternoon at Cabaret Cove, 1540 Pueblo Drive in Rhinelander, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Brief extension approved for outgoing fire chief

At its Friday, Jan. 16 meeting, the city of Rhinelander’s police and fire commission emerged from closed session to approve an extension to the date Brian Tonnancour will end his position as Rhinelander fire chief.

Court date set for Crandon man

A court date of Feb. 17 has been set for a Crandon man accused of a sexually related crime against a minor. On Dec. 25 in Rhinelander, Cody Rohe, 19, was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree sexual assault of a child under 16 years of age, a class C felony, and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
