Rhinelander High School volleyball coach Jayme Wyss showcased her track and field skills earlier this month as she took first place and set a new American record in the women’s heptathlon at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Masters Indoor Heptathlon National Championships in Milwaukee.

Banged up Lady Hodags fall to Mosinee

Facing Mosinee in a battle for second place in the GNC would have been a tall enough challenge for the Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team at full strength. Without its leading scorer and do-it-all guard, the task proved to be insurmountable.

Hodag Hoops fends off Mosinee on the road

Jatyn Barkus scored 15 points — all in the second half — and made 10 free throws over the final two minutes as the Hodags secured a 63-54 win at Mosinee in a battle of last year’s GNC co-champions.

The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team could not keep up with Northland Pines Tuesday night, falling to the Eagles 11-2 in Great Northern Conference play at the Eagle River Sports Arena.

The Rhinelander/Northland Pines Alpine ski team tried to narrow the gap on Northern Conference leading Wausau/D.C. Everest Monday on the central Wisconsin co-op’s home hill.

Leonhardt’s two goals too much for Eagles co-op

The Northland Pines girls’ hockey co-op was unable to complete a season sweep of the Medford Raiders Tuesday night. Zayleah Leonhardt scored twice, including the game-winner with 2:56 remaining in regulation, as the Eagles fell to the Raiders 3-2 at the Simek Center in Medford.

Nordic skiers head to Cable

On a weekend that brought some much-needed snow to northern Wisconsin, several members of the Hodag Nordic Ski Team traveled to Cable to compete in a race that was a late addition to its schedule thanks to Mother Nature’s fickle behavior early on this winter.
