The lost season: RHS golf

Though local golf courses have been open for weeks now, that has not been much consolation to the Rhinelander High School golf team, which saw its 2020 season nixed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hodags Van Zile, Winnicki named to Northern Indigenous All-State team

RHS senior Kenedy Van Zile was honored for her achievements in girls' basketball while junior Makenna Winnicki was honors in girls' swimming.

Hodag BMX slowly getting back on track

The Hodag BMX Club has not held a race yet during the 2020 season - and there is no guarantee that it will be able to going forward due to the COVID-19 pandemic - but the club has started to take some steps toward a return to action.

Trails at CAVOC receive International Ski Federation certification

Four of the trails at the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC) were recently certified by the International Ski Federation (FIS) based in Switzerland. This will be valid for five years.

It's hard to say what the 2020 season would have held for the Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team as it looked to match the Hodag girls' tennis team's feats of seven consecutive Great Northern Conference championships and conference titles in nine of the last 10 seasons.

Former Hodag swimmer Kiah Francis named captain of Liberty University swim team

Kiah Francis, a former state champion for the Rhinelander High School girls' swim team, will enter her senior season at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. as one of its swim and dive team's most distinguished members.

Column: Despite loss of handshakes, sportsmanship will continue in prep sports

There will be many concessions necessary to resume athletic competition in the wake of COVID-19, and shaking hands is one that must cease - at least for now. However, let's view this change as an opportunity to find new ways to showcase sportsmanship in high school sports.

It's hard to say what the Rhinelander High School softball team would have accomplished this season but, in the eyes of coach D.J. DeMeyer, there was nowhere to go but up.

Martin, Losch receive ABC student-athlete scholarships

The ABC recently announced the winners of its $1,000 student-athlete scholarships. Drake Martin and Madi Losch were this year winners. The scholarships were presented during the Rhinelander Area Scholarship Foundation and Rhinelander High School scholarship award ceremony, which was conducted in a virtual setting May 17.

Site preparation continues on the Hodag Sports Complex as the site is brought up to a much higher elevation to aid in stormwater and snow melt will not cause flooding. Once the site preparation is finished, the concrete grade beam that will anchor the air supported dome will be constructed.
