He's white, he's green and he looks like he's been ripped straight from a box of Corn Flakes. He's also perhaps the most galvanizing figure on this year's WIAA state-bound Rhinelander High School boys' cross country team.

Fugle, Schneider share Hodag gridders' Mathisson Award

Joe Fugle and Joe Schneider shared the Maurice "Moose" Mathisson Award given to the team's most outstanding senior. Fugle was also named the team's lineman of the year, while the team also honored Cole Lehman and AJ Bergman during an awards banquet at Cabaret Cove.

The Hodags put a bow on a Wisconsin High School Cycling League Division 2 state championship on Sunday, taking first place in the league's 2021 final at Trek Trails in Waterloo.

Each one of Rhinelander's top five runners set personal-best times Saturday, and all five placed inside the top 20, as the Hodags punched their first team ticket to state since 1997 in a Division 2 sectional hosted by Oconto Falls at The Patriot Golf Club.

Run to greatness

Cal Laggis led six Rhinelander finishers in the top 16 overall as the Hodags won the Great Northern Conference boys' cross country championship at Minocqua Winter Park. Rhinelander finished 18 points ahead of Medford for the conference title - the team's first since its state championship season in 1987.
