GNC preparing for hockey expansion
The Great Northern Conference’s house is getting fuller in terms of boys’ hockey. With one program already slated to join the conference in two years, and another potentially joining next year, the GNC could be looking at as many as 10 teams in the sport in the near future.
Loka, Lindner named Hodags’ most valuable wrestlers
A pair of juniors, Ivan Loka and Cassidy Lindner, took home top honors for the Rhinelander High School boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams Tuesday, March 10. The two were named the programs most valuable wrestlers during a banquet in the James Williams Middle School commons.
Shefveland wins Hodag Hockey’s Al Baker Award
Dylan Shefveland walked away with the Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team’s top honor Monday, March 9, as he was presented with the Alfred O. Baker Outstanding Hockey Player award during the team’s banquet at the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom.

Hodags have high expectations as track season begins
The personnel may look a bit different, but the expectations remain the same for the Rhinelander High School track team after winning both the boys’ and girls’ Great Northern Conference titles last year and following that with a successful postseason run.
Feck named GNC co-player of the year
The rewards within the Great Northern Conference were quite plentiful for the Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team after winning its third straight conference championship.
Hodag Hoops banquet: Feck voted MVP, six players honored
For a handful of weeks, the Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team had planned to celebrate its 2025-26 season a day after the WIAA regional finals. The Hodags just wished it was a celebration in preparation for their first sectional appearance since 2022.
WIAA approves Shawano/Bonduel’s move to GNC in boys’ hockey
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved a strategic plan, several of the Conference Realignment Task Force recommendations, and advanced two Constitutional amendments to the Annual Meeting at its March 10 meeting.
Hodag powerlifters score runner-up finishes at state
With 24 total athletes participating, the Rhinelander High School club powerlifting team finished second in boys’ division 2 and second in the combined co-ed standings at the Wisconsin High School Powerlifting Association state championships held March 6-8 in Appleton.

YMCA, Hodag tennis to host pickleball tournament March 28-29
The YMCA of the Northwoods, in partnership with the Rhinelander High School boys’ and girls’ tennis teams, will host the Clash of the Paddles Indoor Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, at the Hodag Dome.
End of the road
In the final nine minutes Saturday night against Menomonie if anything could go wrong for the Hodags, it did — whether it was foul disparity, problems protecting the basketball or stopping the Mustangs top player.
Hodag gymnasts 10th at state
Rhinelander finished with a 123.0334 in Friday’s team competition, a couple of points behind sectional champion Waupun. On Saturday, junior Emeline Hintz finished 23rd in the all-around and added an impressive 12th-place finish on the balance beam. Fellow junior Alexis Smith was 19th on the vault and freshman Marsadies Williams …
Lady Hodags run out of March magic
Leah Nordin scored 26 points, collected 12 rebounds and converted a key three-point play in the final minute as Shawano snuck past Rhinelander 50-47 Thursday, March 5 win a Division 2 sectional semifinal at Sheldon Fieldhouse.
