Angel On My Shoulder seeks support this holiday season
Local non-profit helps families and loved ones of cancer patients through camps and more
"When a family is affected by cancer, the focus has to be on the patient. Too often though there are loved ones who are also experiencing loss or confusion," said Lolly Rose, founder of Angel on My Shoulder. "That's where Angel On My Shoulder comes in. We're helping these family members feel good and have fun with others they can relate to; to see their faces light up again is an amazing feeling."
The 100 percent volunteer-driven organization, which was founded in 1995, works to provide assistance to cancer patients and their families through a variety of programs and events including:
Camp Retreats - Created for children aged 8 to 18, these cost-free weekend retreats provide campers with an opportunity to meet others like themselves in a well-supervised atmosphere of understanding. The camps are specifically designed for the needs of different age groups: Camp Angel for ages 8-12, Camp Teen Angel for ages 13-15 and Angel Adventures for ages 16-18. The new Camp Hozhoni Weekend supports children living with cancer and their immediate families.
Angel Care - The purpose of Angel Care retreats is to address the needs of the cancer caregivers. Caregivers learn techniques that enable them to reduce the fatigue associated with physical, mental and emotional stress in a safe, nurturing environment while sharing their experiences with other caregivers in similar situations.
Healing Angels - Healing Angels is a unique retreat, custom designed for cancer survivors who have completed their oncology treatments, procedures or surgeries and are on the verge of physical and emotional healing. A combination of education, group discussion, healing "tips" and information on healthy living is offered in a motivational setting where survivors can come together in an environment of love, camaraderie, hope and understanding.
Uplifting Angels - In the fall and spring of each year, very special "thinking of you" packages are delivered to hospitals and oncology clinics throughout Wisconsin and presented to cancer patients, young and old alike. These caring gifts are designed to brighten the cancer patient's day, carrying messages of hope, healing and support.
Angel Wings - In-kind support for individuals living with cancer by special request.
"I am constantly inspired by the people I meet through Angel On My Shoulder from donors and volunteers to those families whose lives we touch," added Rose. "This community is quick to lend a hand and help one another and our organization is very thankful for that."
