Climate myths

I guess United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres didn’t think his hyping global warming risks brought him enough attention, so now he says, “The era of global boiling has arrived!”

Thanks for a successful tax season

To the Editor: I would like to thank all the volunteers, sites, and site personnel that helped make this tax season a success. We completed 1144 tax returns, up from 1062 last year. We saved our clients $171,600 in tax prep fees and got them $1,035,358 back in refunds.

Autism awareness or alarmism?

To the Editor: I write with alarm and disagreement in reference to the three autism-referencing pieces in the April 11 issue of The Lakeland Times: the editorial, “Finally, an administration that cares about autism”, and the two related news pieces, the front-page headline “NIH to launch study to find causes …

Malice towards none? A work in progress

To the Editor: Abraham Lincoln has two quotes I would like to center on: In his first inaugural address he talked about acting in ways that reflected “The better angels of our nature.” In his second inaugural he wanted citizens to act with “Malice toward none and charity to all.”

River News: Our View

We don’t like to keep readers in suspense, so we’ll get right to answering the question in the headline. Shortly, anyway. It’s a perfectly legitimate question given the slaughter that took place on April 1, when progressive (dare we say “far left”) candidate and soon-to-be justice Susan Crawford steamrolled a …

An open letter to Senator Johnson

To the Editor: President Trump promised to quickly end the war in Ukraine. I was skeptical: history tells us the only quick end to a war is surrender.

Trump’s toxic reach stops cold at the Canadian border

This trade war with Canada is not the first. Forty-five years ago, Maine potato farmers piled rotten potatoes at their state’s borders with New Brunswick. Blocking nine crossings, the Mainers accused Canada of unfairly subsidizing its potato growers, thus driving down the prices they could get.

Political money-grab

Did you bet on March Madness? I did, and many of you did, too. Americans bet billions on NCAA tournaments. We also “spent $60 billion at casinos last year (and) about $12 billion on online sports betting,” notes economist Jason Sorens in my new video.

River News: Our View

This month is Autism Awareness Month, and for the first time in a good many years, we think there is really good news when it comes to addressing this ongoing epidemic, which has afflicted not just the United States but the world, and for far too long.

Setting the record straight on wake boats

The lakes of the Northwoods provide countless recreation opportunities yearlong, and during the summer water sports promote accessibility for individuals of all ages and abilities. One of my family’s favorites is wake surfing.

Blue states need Washington less

“Move it back to the states,” Donald Trump says about education, about FEMA and, as will probably happen, about Medicaid. What that would mean to Americans depends on what state they live in. As the federal government moves forward on this, it’s a good bet that high-income states can handle …

Lawn gone liberty: The update

It’s finally spring. Better mow your lawn. If you don’t, your town government may fine you thousands of dollars a day. Worse, if you can’t pay the fine, they may confiscate your home. Six years ago, in Dunedin, Florida, Jim Ficken let his grass grow.

LETTER: Securing social security, solutions over scares

Let’s stay focused on the real problems and important long term solutions when it comes to Social Security.

Liars and fools: Security breach signals something worse than a clown show

Last week’s disclosure that the Trump administration officials responsible for keeping us safe from our enemies resemble reckless frat boys may have been shocking, but it wasn’t surprising. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was already regarded by most members of Congress as profoundly unsuited for that position.
