Rhinelander High School sophomore Sam Schoppe had to wait more than 45 minutes on Tuesday to see if a series of mistakes on his final hole of the day would cost him a chance to qualify for the WIAA Division 1 state golf tournament.
Buchmann sets high goals for WIAA state track meet
Rhinelander's Libbey Buchmann isn't merely happy to have qualified for the WIAA state meet as a freshman. She has some big goals as she gets set to step in the circle this morning for the Division 2 discus event in La Crosse.
Raiders down Hodags 9-2 to end season
Medford scored three times in the third and then tacked on six in the fourth as it raced by Rhinelander 9-2 at Raider Field.
Hodag HOF coach Bob Smith passes away
Bob Smith, a successful three-sport coach at Rhinelander Union High School in the 1960s and member of the Hodag Hall of Fame, passed away in April in Hudson at the age of 86, according to an obituary provided to the River News Sports department.

Hodags knock out Red Robins
Owen Kurtz hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning and the Hodags held off a late rally to defeat the Red Robins 5-3 in the first round of the WIAA playoffs.
Belanger, Roeser punch state tennis ticket
Senior Layne Roeser and junior Joey Belanger won their opening round match and finished third overall in the No. 1 doubles flight last Wednesday in a WIAA Division 1 sectional in Eau Claire.

The Rhinelander High School boys' soccer team had to knock off a couple of very familiar foes in its run to last fall's WIAA Division 3 state tournament. The Hodag girls will likely have to follow a very similar path if they hope to match that feat.

JWMS sweeps conference track meet

Hodag softball falls in extras to No. 1 Medford
Finley Arndt beat a throw to the plate on a Zayleah Leonhardt ground ball in the bottom of the ninth inning as top-ranked and top-seeded Medford edged Rhinelander 3-2 in a Division 2 regional semifinal game in Medford.
Hodag golfers take 3rd, move on to sectionals
The Hodags shot 339 and took third in an eight-team WIAA Division 1 regional at their home course. Rhinelander came in as the fifth seed but improved by two spots to qualify as a team for sectionals for the second year in a row.
Hodag tennis sends five flights to sectionals
The Rhinelander High School tennis team more than held its own Monday against the Wisconsin Valley Conference to begin WIAA tournament play.
