Rhinelander High School welcomed back a pair of former boys' basketball coaches Saturday night who have two Wisconsin Valley Conference titles - and four NCAA Division-III national titles - between them. (subscriber access)

Sectional supremacy

Rhinelander won eight of the 11 events as it captured its fifth straight sectional title at the Ashwaubenon Community Pool. Those eight individual sectional winners, plus 11 more at-large qualifiers, will represent the Hodags down at the WIAA state meet in Waukesha this Friday.

Hodag hoops fends off Lakeland's comeback bid

Will Gretzinger scored a game-high 28 points and made four free throws over the final 12.7 seconds as the Hodags defeated Lakeland 57-53 Friday night in Minocqua. Rhinelander could not keep the momentum going Saturday, however, as it fell to Marathon 69-55 at home.

Kurtz wins regional title for Hodag wrestlers

Owen Kurtz won both of his matches on Saturday as he took the bracket in the 285-pound weight class at a WIAA Division 1 regional in Merrill. That earned him a ticket to next weekend's sectional round in Shawano.

Edge shuts out Beaver Dam again

The Rhinelander/Lakeland/Antigo/Wabeno/Three Lakes co-op defeated Beaver Dam 10-0 at Lakeland Ice Arena in Minocqua.

Lakeland routs Lady Hodags 74-27

The Hodags met the same fate as the rest of the Great Northern Conference, as Lakeland overpowered another conference foe. Saylor Timmerman and Julianna Ouimette both scored 18 points and the T-Birds routed the Hodags 74-27 in Minocqua.

RHS senior reached 1,000 points for her career, scoring 30 Tuesday night to help the Hodag girls' basketball team past Medford 63-52 at Raider Hall.

Hodag Nordic competes at state sprints

The Rhinelander Nordic ski team took a handful of skiers down to Middleton last weekend for the first of two Wisconsin Nordic Ski League state championship races.

Thrive for five

The Hodags won 10 events and placed in the top three with all but one of their 25 entries as they romped to the conference title in the GNC meet at the McKenna Aquatic Center in Antigo.

Hodag hockey picks up wins over Pacelli, Ashland

The Hodags put away from Stevens Point Pacelli 5-2 on Thursday night at the Rhinelander Ice Arena before traveling north Saturday night and skating out of Ashland with a 4-1 win over the Oredockers.

Mosinee closed the game on a 13-0 run and defeated the Hodags 67-56 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
