Elmer Joseph Legrey Jr.

Elmer Joseph Legrey Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, proud veteran, and longtime educator, passed away peacefully at his home on September 18, 2026, at the age of 85.

Born on December 16, 1940, in Madison, Elmer was raised by his parents, Elmer Legrey and Esther (Moyer). Growing up, he developed a deep and abiding Christian faith that would guide and anchor him throughout his entire life.

Following his calling to serve his country, Elmer proudly enlisted in the Navy, completing two tours during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, while flying on C-130s participating in dangerous missions. For his bravery and dedicated service, he was awarded the Bronze Star.

When he returned home, Elmer reunited with the love of his life, Marcia (Reynolds). The couple married and began their journey together, welcoming their first son, Erik. Seeking to build their future, they moved to Platteville, where Elmer attended UW-Platteville, earning his degree to teach industrial arts.

Upon graduation, Elmer and Marcia moved to Rhinelander — the heart of his beloved Northwoods — where they completed their family with the arrival of two more sons, Joshua and Jeremy, and raised their children. Elmer spent 28 dedicated years as a shop teacher at Rhinelander High School. His favorite classes to teach were photography and furniture refinishing. His students loved his sense of humor, and his teachings went far beyond the classroom, teaching them skills they could use in real life.

In retirement, Elmer and Marcia cherished traveling and exploring new places together, embarking on many memorable trips worldwide. Elmer was also happiest when he was outdoors in the woods. An avid sportsman, he cherished his time hunting and fishing — whether bonefishing in the Bahamas, duck hunting in North Dakota, or deer hunting at his beloved properties in Wisconsin and the “UP” of Michigan.

He is preceded in death by his dear son, Jeremy; his parents, Elmer and Esther; and his sister, Pauline (LeRoy) Krueger.

Elmer is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Marcia (Reynolds); his sons, Erik (Amanda) and Joshua (Michelle); his cherished grandchildren, Jeremy, Madeline, Abel, and Esther; his sisters, Lois Legrey Flad and Rhonda (Glenn) Collier; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, September 29, at Carlson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., with the service immediately following.
