Gail Joan Koenig

Gail Joan Koenig, 89, of Rhinelander, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Rhinelander Aspirus Hospital.

Gail was born in Rhinelander on March 21, 1937, to Walter G. and Irmgard I. (Dinger) Winquist. She was raised in Rhinelander and was a 1955 graduate of Rhinelander High School. In 1957, Gail was united in marriage to William Koenig at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rhinelander.

Gail enjoyed being able to stay at home and raise her family. She worked part-time at the First National Bank and at the post office. She assisted her husband Bill with harvesting wild rice and picking aquatic plants for a wildlife nursery in Oshkosh.  

Gail enjoyed crocheting, knitting, traveling to visit relatives and was also a great baker, with many family and friends reaping the benefits of her delicious baked goods.  

Surviving are her children, Jeffrey Koenig of Rhinelander, and Todd (Patricia) Koenig of California, a niece, Jill Sergent of Arizona, and many cousins and good friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, William Koenig, sister, Marilynn Johnson, sister-in-law, Shirley McCarty and brother-in-law, John McCarty.

Cremation will take place.
