Barbara J. Novak



Barbara J. Novak, age 76, of Rhinelander, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 31, 2026. The loving support of her family and friends sustained her during her long struggle with cancer.

Barb was born on September 19, 1949 in Rhinelander to Frank and Rose (Bonat) Dalka. She graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1967.

Barb was an avid bicyclist and walker, along with her husband Gene. Later in life, her brother Denny inspired her to begin running. She participated in many 5Ks and several half marathons and often placed in her division. 

Barb was a familiar presence at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, serving as lector, Eucharistic minister and sacristan. She taught religious education for several years and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. Barb and Gene also participated in a memorable mission trip to Honduras.

Surviving are her daughter Paula (Lars) Larsen of Pewaukee and grandchildren William and Ava; two sisters Patricia Dalka (Alan Mancl) and Audrey Price (Kurt Metz); six brothers Thomas (Stephanie), Dennis (Annette), Richard, Gregory, Gary (Lynne) and George (Lisa), all of Rhinelander; sister-in-law Donna Kohlbeck and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Gene, daughter Lisa, her parents, sister Margaret, brother Frank (Kathy) Dalka and sister-in-law Dawn Dalka.

The visitation for Barb was held on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Parish, 125 E. King Street, from 11 a.m. until the 12:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Fr. Jerome D’Souza officiated.

Immediately following the mass, there was be a procession to Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery for the Committal Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Barb may be given directly to Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Parish or Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School.

Barb’s family would like to extend a special thank you to those who were involved in her care, including her sister-in-law Annette, many friends and family, the staff from Compassus Hospice and the round the clock compassionate care provided by Toni and especially Soledad from Stay Home Instead.
