Lois Ann Nehls, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister passed away on Monday, May 18, 2026 at the Rennes Health and Rehab in Rhinelander. Lois was born on Tuesday, February 16, 1937 in Rhinelander, the oldest daughter of Clarence and Nora (Kussman) Christian. She was 89 years old.
Lois graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1955 and began work as a teller at the First National Bank in Rhinelander. It was there at work where she received the devastating news of her father’s early passing. A few months later, Lois married John (Jack) Nehls on August 3, 1957. They had five children. After her third child Lois left her teller position to focus on raising the family. Later, she began working at Campbells Clothing Store and ultimately returned to First National where she retired in May 1999. Lois was a life-long member of Zion Evangelical Luthern Church where for many years, she enjoyed singing in the choir.
Lois enjoyed being surrounded by her family, whether it be celebrating family holiday or birthday gatherings, rocking an infant grandchild, or taking boat rides on the Wisconsin River. She loved looking through her many cookbooks or browsing online for new recipes, dancing to music, especially a good polka, and always looked forward to enjoying a fabulous meal at one of the many wonderful area supper clubs.
She is survived by her five children, Chris (Donna) Nehls, Corey Nehls, Carla (James) Kuczmarski, Craig (Heidi) Nehls, and Carin (Jon) Sandeman; her 12 grandchildren, John, Ryan, Jenna, Tyler, Jordan, Kaitlynn, Jackson, Heaven, Daray, Grace, Ruby, and Ava, plus, a great-grandson, Riley, all who brought her joy; her two sisters, Charolotte (Jan) Payne and Anna (Steve) Schnell; and many nieces and nephews (Lisa, thanks for your visits). She was proceeded in death by her father and mother, stepfather, Edward Underwood, ex-husband, Jack Nehls, and two nephews, Timothy and Trent LeClaire.
The Nehls family deeply appreciates the care, compassion, and kindness the Rennes staff gave to Lois. There were several special caregivers who truly touched her heart – you know who you are, and we thank you. The family would also like to thank Aspirus Hospice for bringing comfort during her final weeks.
Visitation for Lois will be held on Thursday, June 11, from 9 to 11 a.m., with memorial services following at 11 a.m., all at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Reverend Karl Schultz will officiate. Interment will be in the Newbold Memorial Cemetery. You may leave your private condolences for the Nehls family at www.carlsonfh.com. The Carlson Funeral Home, 715-369-1414, is serving the Nehls family.
