RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, May 26


Baseball: Rhinelander 10, Spencer 0


The Rhinelander High School baseball team picked up its final regular season win against Spencer on May 26 at Stafford Field by a score of 10-0. The game ended in six innings after Charlie Johnson's sacrifice fly put the Hodags at the 10-run mercy rule. 


Batting around the order in the second gave Rhinelander a 6-0 lead, and two Hodags were hit by a pitch in the fourth to make it all the way around for another pair of runs. Two RBIs in the bottom of the sixth capped of a 16-2 regular season for the Hodags. 


Johnson and Sawyer Bishop both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Vince White added another RBI and scored two runs. 


White, Conner Rappley and Jackson Waydick pitched two innings each and combined for 17 strikeouts. Rappley struck out the side in the fourth after Waydick did it to start the game in the first. 


Rhinelander (16-2, 12-2 Great Northern) will start postseason play against the winner of Ashland/Bloomer at Stafford Field on June 2nd.


Girls' soccer: Rhinelander 4, Mosinee 0


In a game that was forced inside the Hodag Dome due to lightning, the Rhinelander High School girls' soccer team won their final regular season game 4-0 over Mosinee on May 26. 


The seventh minute brought the first goal for the Hodags by Gabby Wanta. In the 32nd, Basil Chiamulera sent one home on an assist from Ella Miljevich. Miljevich scored the final two scored of the game in the 49' and 68'. 


Rhinelander allowed zero shots on goal. 


The Hodags (12-4-0, 10-2-0-0 Great Northern) will host Antigo at Mike Webster Stadium on June 4 as they begin WIAA regionals as a two-seed.


Track: RHS boys 1st/9, girls 1st/9 WIAA regionals


The Rhinelander High School boys’ and girls’ track teams both walked away with 15 sectional-qualifying entries and team regional titles Tuesday from a WIAA D2 regional meet in Medford. 


The Hodag girls one eight events. Aila Bergman had a hand in four of those wins, taking the 100-meter hurdles, the 300 hurdles, the triple jump and as a member of the 4x400 relay. Marsadies Williams claimed the long jump, Macy Myers won the pole vault and the Hodags also won the 4x800 and 4x200 relays.


On the boys’ side, Avrom Barr won the 1,600 and was on the winning 4x800 and 4x400 teams. Myles Eagleson took the triple jump and the Hodags also won the 4x100.


The meet included a three-hour delay due to inclement weather. The top four finishes in each event advanced to Friday’s sectional round in Rice Lake.


Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 3rd/7, WIAA subsections


The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team advanced on flight and finished third Tuesday in a WIAA Division 1 tennis subsectional at Wausau West. 


Asher Rivord advanced to sectionals in the No. 1 singles flight, defeating Wausau East’s Julio Florres 6-2, 6-0 in his only match of the day. 


The Hodags had five other flights come within one win of sectionals. Calvin Loomis (No. 2), Aidan Lueder (No. 3) and Mark Currie (No. 4) all won their first matches in singles play but lost their second. It was a similar story for the No. 2 doubles team of Brayden Barnhill and Kellen O’Malley. 


Danek Koniar and Henry Bondardelli lost their lone match of the day at No. 1 doubles and Roan Childs and Owen Evers were defeated in a match tiebreaker in their first match at No. 3 doubles. 


For Rivord, sectionals will take place Friday in Eau Claire. He needs to win his opening round match to secure an automatic qualifying spot to the WIAA state tournament.


Golf: Rhinelander 7th/9, WIAA regionals


The season ended for the Rhinelander High School golf team Tuesday with a seventh place finish at WIAA regionals hosted by D.C. Everest at Greenwood Hills Country Club. 


The Hodags shot 342 and missed qualifying as a team by 20 strokes. Individually, Hank Kowieski shot 82, missing a playoff for the final individual sectional qualifying shot by one stroke. Grant Gremban and Drake Nelson each shot 86s, Dylan Shefveland had an 88 and Blake Petroff shot 99.


Softball: Rhinelander at Antigo, ppd.


Tuesday’s schedule WIAA softball regional between Rhinelander and Antigo was postponed due to thunderstorms. The game will be played at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Antigo with the winner facing second-seeded Mosinee on Thursday.
