RHS Sports recap: Thursday, May 21
Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 1st/5, GNC Meet
The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team made history with their 12th consecutive conference title after winning the GNC meet on Thursday. The team scored 34 points on the day, making their season total 78.
First-place finishes went to Asher Rivord in No. 1 singles, Calvin Loomis in No. 2 singles, and Brayden Barnhill/Kellen O'Malley in No. 2 doubles.
The Hodags made the final match in the remaining flights, sending second place finishes to Mark Currie in No. 4 singles, Aidan Lueder in No. 3 singles, Roan Childs/Owen Evers in No. 3 doubles, and Danek Konair/Henry Bonardelli in No. 1 doubles.
The 12 straight conference titles surpassed Mosinee softball (11) for the most consecutive titles in GNC history.
Up next, the Hodags travel to Wausau West for WIAA sub sectionals on Tuesday.
Baseball: Medford 2, Rhinelander 1
The Rhinelander High School baseball team dropped the Great Northern Conference finale Thursday at home, falling to Medford 2-1 at Stafford Field.
The Raiders got both of their runs in the fourth inning while the Hodags, held to three hits on the night, plated their only run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Charlie Johnson.
Conner Rappley took the loss for Rhinelander. Though he struck out six and scattered just two hits over four innings, he struggled with command. Rappley walked four batters, hit three others and surrendered what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch.
Rhinelander (15-2, 12-2 Great Northern) is scheduled to close out the regular season at home against Spencer on Tuesday.
Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 2, Medford 0
The Rhinelander High School girls' soccer team beat Medford 2-0 at Mike Webster Stadium in Rhinelander on Thursday.
Ella Miljevich and Jordan Mankse each scored for the Hodags, with Miljevich assisting Mankse on her boot in the 79'.
Rhinelander outpaced Medford with 18 (11) shots, to the Red Raiders' 2(1). Rylee Mickevicius got the shutout.
The Hodags (11-4-1, 9-2-0-0 Great Northern) will be back at Mike Webster Stadium to play Mosinee on Tuesday.
Golf: Rhinelander 1st/8, Hodag Invitational
The Rhinelander High School golf team closed out the regular season with a 341 on Thursday as it won its home invitational by five strokes over Three Lakes at Northwood Golf Club.
Grant Gremban, despite making a triple bogey on his last hole of the day, shot 79 and held on to a one-shot win over Wausau Newman’s Jacob Fox. Hank Kowieski shot 81 and placed fourth after losing out on a one-hole playoff for third. Drake Nelson Shot 89, Blake Petroff had a 92 and Chase West shot 94.
The Hodags will take part in WIAA Division 1 regional play at Greenwood Hills Country Club in Wausau on Tuesday.
Track: RHS boys 3rd/9, girls 3rd/8, Dale Peterson Invite
The Rhinelander High School track team rested most of its key runners Thursday, but still managed to finish third in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the Dale Peterson Invite in Antigo.
Charlie Antonuk was the lone winner for the Hodag boys, claiming the pole vault. Kamden Kostrova had runner-up finishes in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Emily Schiek won the 3,200 meters for the Hodag girls while Tatiana Vadis claimed the shot put.
The Hodags will take part in a WIAA Division 2 regional Tuesday at Medford.
