RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, May 19

Track: RHS boys 1st/8, girls 1st/8, GNC Meet

For the second year in a row the Rhinelander High School boys’ and girls’ track teams have won the Great Northern Conference championship. The Hodags wrapped up the conference titles at home Tuesday night at Mike Webster Stadium. The Hodag girls roared to a 68-point win while the Hodag boys edged out Lakeland by 15 for the top spot.

Rhinelander racked up wins by the bunches. Avrom Barr swept the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters as he was named the GNC boys’ runner of the year. Ayden Myers claimed the pole vault and the Hodags boys won all four relay races.

Macy Myers broke her own school and conference records in the pole vault, winning that with a vault of 11 feet, 7 inches. She added a win in the 800 meters. Aila Bergman swept the 100 and 300 hurdles, breaking her own conference mark in the 300 hurdles in the process. Libbey Buchan claimed the shot put, Marsadies Williams claimed the long jump and Rhinelander won the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Tuesday marked the fourth conference title since 2019 for the Hodag boys’ program and the second ever title for the Hodag girls, coming on the heels of last year’s triumph.

Rhinelander will travel to Medford for a WIAA Division 2 regional meet Tuesday, May 26.

Baseball: Rhinelander 13, Edgar 6

The Rhinelander High School baseball team beat Edgar 13-6 in a non-conference matchup at Stafford Field Tuesday.

The Hodags had a five-run second, four-run third, and four-run sixth to oust the Wildcats. Edgar was able to rally late, with three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh, but the distance was too great to overcome and Rhinelander walked away victorious.

Vince White and Charlie Johnson were both 3-for-4, adding an RBI each.

Jackson Waydick pitched five innings for Rhinelander, allowing one run on four hits and two walks. He had four strikeouts.

Rhinelander (15-1, 12-1 Great Northern) will play Medford in their final GNC game of the season at Stafford Field on Thursday.

Girls' soccer: Rhinelander 14, Antigo 0

The Rhinelander High School girls' soccer team beat Antigo handily at Antigo High School on Tuesday. The Hodags scored early and often to beat the Red Robins 14-0.

Ella Miljevich led the way for Rhinelander with eight goals, seven of which came in the first half. Ella Heck had a team-high three assists on the night.

Goalkeeper Rylee Mickevicius saved Antigo's one shot on goal to preserve the shutout.

Rhinelander (10-4-0, 8-2-0-0 Great Northern) will play Medford at Mike Webster Stadium on Thursday.
