RHS Sports recap: Monday, May 18
Baseball: Rhinelander 3, Lakeland 2
The Rhinelander High School baseball team walked off Lakeland in the bottom of the seventh to win 3-2 and claim the GNC title outright at Stafford Field on May 18.
In a back-and-forth game, Vince White hit the sacrifice fly that brought Jackson Waydick home for the winning run. Both teams scored one run in the first, with Lakeland tallying one more in the third before Rhinelander scored a single run in the fourth to tie the game 2-2. Sawyer Bishop was intentionally walked to load the bases for White to do the final damage.
Bishop, Charlie Johnson, and Josh Willoughby were all 2-for-3 in the game, while White and Jaxon West had an RBI each for the Hodags.
White also pitched six innings, striking out a dozen Thunderbirds while allowing two runs on six hits and one walk. Waydick pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win.
Rhinelander (14-1, 12-1 Great Northern) will play Edgar in a non-conference game Tuesday at Stafford Field.
