RHS Sports recap: Thursday, May 14


Baseball: Mosinee 2, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School baseball team lost their first game of the season to the Mosinee Indians at Mosinee High School May 14. The Hodags are now 13-1 and Mosinee has won 10 in a row. 


Mosinee scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, while the Hodags had trouble throughout the game stringing enough hits together to cross home. Rhinelander had four hits and struck out 10 times. 


Abe Gretzinger was 1-for-2, and also forced two walks. 


Conner Rappley pitched the complete six innings for the Hodags, walking two and striking out seven while the Indians tallied two runs on seven hits.  


The Hodags (13-1, 11-1 GNC) will play Lakeland at Stafford Field on Monday. 


Softball: Mosinee 29, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School softball team lost 29-0 in five innings to the Mosinee Indians at Haug Diamond Thursday.


Mosinee scored 10 runs in the first inning and continued to pile it on the rest of the game. They hit four home runs.


Rhinelander's spark came in the bottom of the fifth when senior Neveah Anderson got a hit to break Mosinee's combined no hitter with a shot into left field.  


Kendall Vanney and Aleece Johnson pitched for the Hodags and allowed a combined 28 hits to the Indians. Vanney struck out one Mosinee batter in the top of the third. 


Rhinelander starts WIAA regional playoffs at Antigo on May 21. 


Track: RHS boys 1st/13, girls 1st/14


The RHS boys’ and girls’ track teams performed well in their final conference tuneup, sweeping the Hodag Invite at Mike Webster Stadium. 


Rhinelander’s girls won seven events, three of which came courtesy of senior Aila Bergman, who broke a 46-year-old school record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9 1/2 inches. She also won the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. Macy Myers won the pole vault, Libbey Buchmann took the discus and the Hodags won the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.


On the boys’ side, Ben Olson won the 200-meter dash and was on the winning 4x100 team with Sam Zwaard, Cyrus Leisure and Amos Bergman. Avrom Barr won the 1,600, Myles Eagleson took the triple jump and the Hodags won the 4x100 throwers relay. 


The Hoadgs will host the Great Northern Conference meet Tuesday.


Golf: Rhinelander 3rd/8, GNC Meet No. 7


The RHS boys’ golf team shot 332 and finished third in the penultimate leg of the Great Northern Conference tournament Thursday at Trout Lake Golf Club in Arbor Vitae.


Grant Gremban took third overall with a 5-over round of 77. Chase West tied for seventh with an 80. Blake Petroff shot 87, Dylan Shefeland shot 88 and Hank Kowieski had an 89. 


The Hodags will take part in an invite Friday at St. Germain Golf Course.
