Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 1-2, Hodag Invite
The RHS boys’ tennis team went 1-2 in the opening day of its home invite Friday at the RHS tennis courts. Rhinelander edged Wausau West 4-3 in its opening match before falling to Ellsworth 5-2 and River Falls 7-0.
Calvin Loomis prevailed in a match tiebreaker at No. 2 singles, as did the No. 2 doubles tandem of Brayden Barnhill and Kellen O’Malley to secure the win over Wausau West. Asher Rivord and Aidan Lueder were straight-set winners at Nos. 1 and 3 singles.
Rivord and Danek Koniar played at No. 1 doubles against Ellsworth, recording a straight-set win. Henry Bonardelli was Rhinelander’s lone winner in singles, prevailing in the third flight. The Hodags lost two matches in match tiebreakers.
Rhinelander (14-9, 4-0 Great Northern) will play two more matches Saturday in its home invite.
Golf: Rhinelander 1st/5, Northland Pines Invite
The RHS boys’ golf team shot 335 and won the five-team Northland Pines Invite by 17 strokes Friday at St. Germain Golf Course.
Grant Gremban and Hank Kowieski were in a four-way playoff for medalist honors after matching the low round in regulation with matching 81s. They bowed out early in the playoff and settled for third an fourth overall.
Dylan Shefveland was sixth with an 86, Blake Petroff shot 87.
The Hodags will travel to Indianhead G.C. In Mosinee on Monday for the final round of the GNC tournament.
