Two free youth summer science events to be held in June

Youth in grades 4-12 will have the chance to dig into real‑world science this June as the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and Oneida County 4‑H team up to offer two free immersive, hands‑on learning events: Potato Science Discovery Day on Friday, June 12, and Wildlife, Woods, and Water Exploration Day on Saturday, June 13. Both programs are open to youth entering grades 4-12 and their parent or guardian.

Together, these events invite participants to step directly into Wisconsin’s living laboratories — one focused on agricultural innovation, the other on natural resource science — while engaging with UW–Madison experts, researchers, and educators.

Event 1: Potato Science Discovery Day, from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, June 12, at Rhinelander Agricultural Research Station, 4181 Camp Bryn Afon Road in Rhinelander.

Youth will go behind the scenes at the renowned UW Lelah Starks Potato Breeding Farm, a cornerstone of Wisconsin’s potato research for more than 50 years. Participants will explore how scientists grow, test, and improve one of the state’s most iconic crops while discovering the natural resource science that supports agricultural systems.

Highlights will include:

• Hands-on activities in soil and water science.

• Exploration of plant genetics and potato breeding.

• Conversations with farm managers shaping the future of Wisconsin agriculture.

• Outdoor learning across 235 acres of research fields.

• Wagon ride and snacks included. Please share dietary restrictions in advance.

Participants should bring a refillable water bottle, layered clothing, hat, bug spray and a rain coat or umbrella just in case.

Space is limited so register sooner than later.

Event 2: Wildlife, Woods, and Water Exploration Day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 13, at Kemp Natural Resources Station, 9161 Kemp Road in Woodruff.

Set among 231 acres of forest, shoreline, and research spaces (including rare old‑growth stands) the UW–Madison Kemp Natural Resources Station offers an ideal setting for a full day of ecological discovery. Participants will rotate through three interactive stations led by natural resource experts.

Hands‑on learning stations include:

• Wildlife Ecology: Tracking and observing how animals survive in northern forests.

• Entomology: Investigating the insects that keep ecosystems functioning.

• Freshwater mussels and aquatic Species: Exploring the hidden life beneath Wisconsin waters.

• Plus: A science and nature-themed activity offered by Oneida County 4‑H.

Limited to 60 youth and adults total. A free lunch is provided indoors; please share any dietary restrictions in advance.

Most activities will take place outdoors. Participants should bring a refillable water bottle; layered clothing, hat, bug spray, and a rain coat or umbrella just in case.
