RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, May 12


Girls’ soccer: Lakeland 2, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team’s bid to even the GNC race went awry Tuesday at the Hodags fell to the Lakeland Thunderbirds 2-0 in Mincoqua. 


The Hodags conceded a goal in each have and suffered a significant blow when reigning GNC co-offensive player of the year Vivian Lamers left the game in the 32nd minute with a lower right leg injury and did not return. 


Karsyn Dyre and Malin Awker scored for Lakeland. Shots were 17-13 in favor of the Hodags. Rylee Mickevicius made seven saves in defeat. 


Rhinelander (9-4-0, 7-2-0-0 Great Northern) travels to Antigo Tuesday, May 19.


Softball: Merrill 8, Rhinelander 4


The Rhinelander High School softball team fell to the Merrill Blue Jays 8-4 at the Haug Family Softball Complex on May 12. 


The Hodags jumped to an early 3-1 lead after the first inning, but couldn't find home plate again until the bottom of the seventh. Merrill took the lead 4-3 in the fourth before scoring again in the fifth and adding another three in the sixth. 


Saige Mutter went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, while Kendall Vanney was 1-for-2 and tallied another RBI. 


Aleece Johnson pitched all seven for the Hodags. She finished with three walks and two strikeouts, and allowed eight runs (two earned) on nine hits. 


Rhinelander (10-13, 4-8 GNC) will play Mosinee for their final GNC game at the Haug Family Softball Complex on Thursday.


Track: RHS girls 1st/11, boys 4th/11 Tomahawk Invite


The Rhinelander High School girls’ track team won six events and took first place in the 11-team Hatchet Invite in Tomahawk on Tuesday. The Hodag boys placed fourth in their division. 


Libyen Buchmann led a 1-3-4-5 finish in the shot put and also won the discus for the Hodags. Millie Gruett and Kara Monk finished 1-2 in the 800, Marsadies Williams claimed the long jump, Macy Myers won the pole vault and the Hodags took the 4x400 relay with Teagan Clark, Gruett, Shyanne Huckstaedt and Myers.


Ayden Myers scored the Hodags’ lone win on the boys’ side, claiming the pole vault.


Rhinelander will host the Hodag Invite Thursday at Mike Webster Stadium.
