Tinderbox conditions prompt city and county suspensions of all outdoor burning

By ARDITH CARLTON

An ongoing lack of rainfall, coupled with dry vegetation and persistent gusty winds, prompted the city of Rhinelander on May 4 to announce the suspension of all outdoor burning within the city until further notice.

Earlier that day, the Wisconsin DNR suspended burn permits in 43 counties, including Oneida, Vilas, and most of the upper two-thirds of the state. At press time the fire danger in our area remains listed as “very high.”

“Residents are urged to comply with this suspension and to exercise caution with any potential fire hazards,” cautions the release from the city of Rhinelander.
