RHS Sports recap: Friday, May 1

Baseball: Rhinelander 6, Tomahawk 4, 9 inn.

The Rhinelander High School baseball team completed the conference season sweep of the Tomahawk Hatchets, prevailing 6-4 in nine innings at Kahle Field in Tomahawk.

Tomahawk forced extra innings when they tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Hodags scored a pair in the top of the ninth to seal the victory. Rhinelander also scored two runs in the second and fourth innings. The Hatchets plated one in the first, but didn't score again until the seventh to tie it at 4-4.

Josh Willoughby was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Two RBIs also came from Abe Gretzinger, who went 2-for-5.

Charlie Johnson rung up seven strikeouts in five innings. He allowed one run, two hits, and two walks. Vince White provided an inning and a third of relief, before Rowan Wiczek struck out five as he finished the game.

Rhinelander (9-0, 6-0 GNC) is scheduled to play Wausau East Monday, May 4.

Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 1, Hayward 0

Vivian Lamers’ goal in the seventh minute stood as the only tally Friday night as the Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team knocked off Hayward 1-0 in non-conference play at Mike Webster Stadium.

The Hodags dominated the possession and chances, outshooting the Hurricanes 34-1, but Lamers was the only player to find the net — doing so off a third chance following a corner kick.

Rylee Mickevicius did not need to make a save for a second consecutive night as the Hodags posted back-to-back shutouts.

Rhinelander (8-3-0, 6-1-0-0 Great Northern) travels to Eagle River Tuesday to face Northland Pines.

Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 2-1, Wausau West Invite

The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team went 2-1 in its matches Friday in the Wausau West Invite. The Hodags defeated Medford 5-2 and Pulaski 4-3, and lost to Bay Port 6-1.

Calvin Loomis won all three of his matches on Friday, splitting time between Nos. 1 and 2 singles. The team of Brayden Barnhill and Kellen O’Malley went 2-1 on the day at No. 2 doubles. Asher Rivord won one match each in singles and doubles and Danek Koniar won tow matches with two different partners at No. 1 doubles.

Rhinelander (9-4, 3-0 Great Northern) will finish out the invite on Saturday.

Track: RHS boys 3rd/10, girls 3rd/9, Kaukauna Invite

Both the RHS boys’ and girls’ track teams scored third-place finishes Friday night in the Kaukauna Invite.

Rhinelander’s lone win on the girls’ side was a record-breaker, as Libbey Buchmann re-wrote the school mark in the discus for the third time in five meets. She threw it 137 feet, 4 inches this time around. Avrom Barr had a hand in both Rhinelander wins. He claimed the open 800-meter run and was the anchor leg of the 4x800 with Dean Gillingham, Jonathan Campbell and Jackson Weinzatl.

Landon Catlin (triple jump) and Ayden Myers (pole vault) had runner-up finishes for the Hodag boys. Aila Bergman was second in both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Lucy Eddy was second in the 400, Macy Myers took second in the pole vault and both were on the runner-up 4x800 team with Kara Monk and Millie Gruett.

The Hodags return to action Tuesday at Lakeland.

Golf: Rhinelander at GNC Meet No. 3, ppd.

The third round of the Great Northern Conference golf tournament, scheduled for Friday at Rhinelander’s Northwood Golf Club, was postponed due to cold weather. A make-up date was not immediately announced.

Rhinelander is back on the course Tuesday when Antigo hosts the next leg of the conference tournament at Bass Lake Golf Club in Deerbrook.

Full reports will be published in Tuesday’s River News.
