‘Citizen Science 101’ class connects outdoor interest and scientific contribution
The School District of Rhinelander Community Education Program will host a hands-on learning opportunity, Citizen Science 101, on Monday, May 11, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC).
Open to individuals from 6th grade through adult, this interactive class introduces participants to the growing field of citizen science — where volunteers of all backgrounds contribute to real-world scientific research through data collection and observation.
The class will be led by Fox Corvus, a naturalist from UWSP Treehaven, who will guide attendees through several widely used citizen science platforms focused on the natural world, including iNaturalist, eBird, and Snapshot Wisconsin. Through demonstrations and guided practice, participants will learn how to use these digital tools, contribute their own observations, and support ongoing conservation and research efforts.
Program organizers note that this class is a great way for people to connect their interest in the outdoors with meaningful scientific contribution, and that participants will leave with practical skills they can continue to use in their everyday lives.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a smartphone or device for participation. A limited number of iPads will be available for use during the session. The cost is $20 per person, and the registration deadline is May 7.
Registration is available through the Community Education section of the School District of Rhinelander website: https://www.rhinelander.k12.wi.us/community/community-education-classes.cfm
