RHS Sports recap: Thursday, March 26
Softball: Rhinelander 7, Crandon 3; Crivitz 7, Rhinelander 1
The Rhinelander High School softball team split a pair of games in a season-opening quadrangular on Thursday, defeating Crandon 7-3 before falling to Crivitz 7-1 at the Hodag Dome.
A four-run third inning proved to be the difference for the Hodags against the Cardinals. Rhinelander tacked on two more in the fifth and one in the sixth while the Cardinals scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh. Aleece Johnson struck out 12 and allowed two earned runs on four hits over seven innings in the win for Rhinelander. Kadyn Taylor went 1 for 3 with three RBIs and Kendall Vanney was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
Crivitz scored four times in the first two innings of the second game and tacked on three more in the fifth after the Hodags scored their lone run in the fourth. Vanney took the loss for Rhinelander, allowing seven runs — three earned — on 10 hits over five innings. The Hodags managed only three hits in the second game, including an RBI double from Saige Mutter.
Rhinelander (1-1, 0-0 Great Northern) will play Lena on Saturday in the Hodag Dome to open up its bracket in the Danny Mac Invite.
Track: RHS boys 2nd/9, girls 2nd/9, Northland Pines Indoor
Both the RHS boys’ and girls’ track teams scored runner-up finishes Thursday at the Northland Pines Indoor Invitational in Eagle River.
Myles Eagleson made his season debut for the Hodag boys, winning the triple jump while junior Ryley Hull claimed the 55-meter hurdles and was second in the 200 hurdles. Avrom Barr was the runner-up in the 800 meters, Paul Denis was second in the pole vault and both were on the second-place 4x400 relay squad with Dean Gillingham and Jonathan Campbell.
Rhinelander swept the top two places in all three events it won. Aila Bergman, Alexis Smith and Emeline Hintz went 1-2-3 in the 55 hurdles, Hintz and Smith went 1-2 in the 200 hurdles and Macy Myers and Hintz finished 1-2 in the pole vault. Lily Treder scored runner-up finishes in the high jump, triple jump and long jump, Lucy Eddy was second in the 400 and Kara Monk took second in the 800.
The Hodags return to action Tuesday, March 31 in an invite at Merrill.
