Walter L. Baker, Sr., 92, of Rhinelander, passed away peacefully at home on March 15, 2026. Born on April 3, 1933, in Pittsville, Walter lived a full and meaningful life as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Walter proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following his military service, he embarked on a dedicated 38-year career at the Rhinelander Paper Mill. From 1959 to 1996, he worked tirelessly as a skilled millwright, earning the admiration of his colleagues for his work ethic and commitment to his craft.
An avid outdoorsman, Walter was a passionate deer hunter and fisherman who cherished his time in nature. After retiring, he and his wife, Margaret, enjoyed many winters in Yuma, Ariz., surrounded by friends and warm weather. These years were filled with camaraderie and relaxation as they embraced their shared love for travel and community.
Walter was deeply devoted to his faith and was a member of the First Congregational Church in Rhinelander. It was there that he and Margaret exchanged vows on February 5, 1983 — a union that brought joy and companionship for over four decades.
Family was at the heart of Walter’s life. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret A. (Bolander) Baker; his children: Norma Jean Dent (Charles), Holly Soileau, Gloria Baker, Walter Baker Jr., Greg Grobe (Lisa), Julie Kelly (Mark), Jody Jeffers (Wayne), and Jennifer Hart; and numerous grandchildren: Cindy Roberts, Harold Hausz Jr., Andrew Dent (Jill), Caroline Wallace (Ben), Kyle Peter, Kevin Peter (Lauren), Keith Peter, Amber Wendorf (Jake), Dustin Foust (Rebecca), Gretchen Ruby (Tyler), Rebecca Bloom (Eric), Jeanie Bauer (Matt), Jaedyn Wadd, Sky Hart (Craig), Theo Hart, Krystal Jeffers, Megan Jeffers, and Elric Jeffers. Walter also leaves behind many great-grandchildren who carry forward his legacy. He is further survived by his siblings: Gary Baker (Kathleen Wilson), Jerry Baker (Kathleen), and Beverly Hallstrom.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Isabel Baker; his first wife, Caroline Baker (Alexander); his siblings, Peggy Marquardt, Virginia Kasmarek, Marilyn Baker, Grant Baker, and Charles Baker; and his daughter, Diane Hausz.
