Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 64, Wausau East 52
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team pulled away early in the second half and then withstood a pair of Wausau East rallies to defeat the Lumberjacks 64-52 in the WIAA Division 2 regional semifinals Friday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags broke a 15-all halftime tie with a 13-0 run to start the second and led by as many as 21 with 7:53 remaining. East used a 14-0 run to close with in 47-40 with 4:00 left and got back with in 53-46 with 1:37 to play, but the Hodags were able to hold on for the win.
Rowan Wiczek and Abe Gretzinger had 16 points each for Rhinelander while Jatyn Barkus recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Robbie Angiulli led Wausau East with 15.
The Hodags (22-3) will face third-seeded Menomonie Saturday in the regional finals at the Miazga Gym. The Mustangs defeated Merrill 56-34 on Friday. Tipoff for Saturday’s game is set for 7 p.m.
Gymnastics: Rhinelander 10th/10, WIAA D2 State Meet
The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team scored 123.0334 points on Friday and finished 10th out of 10 squads in the team portion of the WIAA Division 2 state gymnastics meet in Wisconsin Rapids.
The Hodags scored 10th in every event except balance beam, where they were ninth.
Emeline Hintz scored 32.55 in the all-around and led the Hodags in two events, scoring an 8.2667 on balance beam and a 7.5167 on uneven bars. Alexis Smith finished with a 30.7834 in the all-around and was tops for Hodags on floor exercise (8.7667) and vault (8.3667). Marsadies Williams and Addison Fish added scores of 8-plus on the vault as the scored 29.9 and 29.7334 in the all-around, respectively.
Hintz, Smith and Williams will compete in the individual portion of the state meet Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.
