RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Jan. 29
Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 2-0, GNC double dual
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team won nine of 11 events in its home finale on Thursday as it downed Shawano/Seymour 122-48 and Medford 135-29 in a GNC double dual at the Heck Family Community Pool.
Six different Hodags found the winner circle, led by Dean Gillingham and Judson O’Malley, who both had four-win nights. Gillingham took the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 freestyle; O’Malley won the 200 freestyle and the 50 freestyle and both were on the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
Charlie Antonuk was also on both of those relays and added a victory in the 100 breaststroke to cap off a three-win program. Kellen O’Malley won the 500 freestyle, Elias Simonson took the 100 backstroke and Daniel Meier was part of the win in the 200 freestyle relay.
Rhinelander travels to Minocqua Friday, Feb. 7 for the Great Northern Conference meet.
Boys’ wrestling: Rhinelander 1-2, Antigo Quadrangular
The RHS boys’ wrestling team went 1-2 in a quadrangular Thursday night in Antigo. The Hodags started with a 68-10 loss to Antigo in a GNC dual and then fell to Waupaca 54-30 before defeating Clintonville 59-12.
Ivan Loka (132 pounds) and Brock Sternitzky (285) both went 3-0 on the night. Loka had two pins and a major decision while Sternitzky had a pin and two forfeit wins.
Anthony Boldt (150), Gage Anderson (157) and Noah Leisure (165) all went 2-1 for Rhinelander.
The Hodags (2-4 Great Northern) will head to Medford Saturday, Feb. 8 for the Great Northern Conference meet.
