The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team, prior to its game Thursday, Jan. 22 against the Stevens Point Pacelli Cardinals, paid tribute to one of its alumni by posthumously retiring the No. 7 jersey worn by Jeb Ostrom.
Ostrom, a class of 2005 RHS graduate and brother of Hodag assistant coach Randy Ostrom, passed away in December 2024 at the age of 37 following an illness.
“Throughout this program, he forged lifelong friendships and created unforgettable memories, including a special trip to Sweden as a peewee player,” the team said in a statement, which was read over the public address system prior to the game. “As a dedicated defenseman, Jeb’s passion for the game was evident. He was renowned for his punishing open-ice checks, sharp vision on the ice, and unwavering commitment to his teammates … In heartfelt recognition of Jeb’s profound impact on the program and his community, head coach M.J. Laggis of Rhinelander High School is commemorating Jeb by retiring his No. 7 jersey.”

"This special honor will mean that the jersey will only be worn by his children, ensuring that his legacy lives on through them,” the team stated.
