Sheboygan Falls man is Oneida County’s first snowmobile fatality for 2025-26
A 76-year old Sheboygan Falls man injured as the result of a collision between his snowmobile and a sport utility vehicle (SUV) on State Highway 70 at the intersection of Morgan Road on Jan. 3 has died.
Minocqua police chief Glenn Janzer said in a Jan. 20 press release the department was notified by the Oneida County medical examiner’s office “that the operator of the snowmobile has succumbed to his injures and has passed away.”
According to the state accident report filed by the Minocqua police department, Gerald Selk was riding a 2021 Arctic Cat northbound on the snowmobile trail.
At one point, he attempted to cross Hwy. 70 and didn’t see an eastbound 2016 Subaru Outback SUV driven by Sarah Gruber, 38, Crandon, which struck Selk’s Arctic Cat, causing it to spin.
He fell off the snowmobile onto the pavement and was taken by ambulance to Marshfield Medical Center for treatment.
Gruber and three other occupants in the Subaru were not injured.
Janzer said in the press release at the time of the initial report, Selk “was observed alert and talking with first responders and police officers.”
Janzer said the Oneida County medical examiner’s office had been notified of Selk’s death by staff with the Milwaukee County medical examiner’s office on Jan. 18.
Following the accident, Selk was initially treated at Marshfield Clinic before being released to a rehabilitation center in Sheboygan.
“He was then transported back to an Aurora Hospital in Milwaukee,” Janzer said in the press release and he added the department “was informed this is the first fatal snowmobile accident in Oneida County this season.”
Even though a state accident report has already been completed and filed by the police department, Janzer said the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will be conducting an investigation of the crash.
