RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Jan. 22
Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 76, Medford 57
Devon Feck scored 23 points to lead four Hodags in double figures and the Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 76-57 win over Medford Thursday at Raider Hall.
The Hodags led by as many as 22 in the first half before taking a 40-28 lead to the break. The closest the Raiders got in the second half was down 15.
Rowan Wiczek scored a career-high 16 points for Rhinelander. Abe Gretzinger also scored 16 and Evan Shoeder had 14.
Nick Krause paced Medford with 16 points. The Raiders stayed in contact thanks to 11 3-pointers in the contest.
Rhinelander (11-2, 6-1 Great Northern) hosts Tomahawk on Monday.
Girls’ basketball: Medford 53, Rhinelander 51
A furious late rally for the RHS girls’ basketball team came up short as Aubryn Clark missed a game-tying runner in the final seconds and the Hodags fell to Medford 53-51 Thursday at Raider Hall.
Rhinelander trailed 51-34 with four minutes remaining before roaring back and making it a two-point game on a Clark bucket with 18 seconds left. She scored 23 to lead Rhinelander while Maddie Paulson added nine points in her first career start.
Taylor Klingbeil had 17 points to lead three Raiders in double figures.
Rhinelander (7-9, 4-4 Great Northern) hosts Tomahawk on Monday.
Boys’ hockey: Pacelli 9, Medford 2
The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team fell at home to Pacelli 9-2 Thursday at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
The Cardinal scored twice each in the first two periods and five times in the third. Drake Nelson and CJ Sparks scored the goals for Rhinelander.
The Hodags were outshot 56-26 in the game. Connor McGee made 47 saves in the loss.
Rhinelander (1-15-0, 1-7-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Antigo on Tuesday.
Boys’ wrestling: Rhinelander 46, Medford 24
The Rhinelander High School wrestling team won five on nine contested bouts and benefited from three forfeits Thursday as it defeated Medford 46-24 in a GNC dual at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags took control by winning five straight bouts. Michael Tredupp (126), Ivan Loka (132), Hoyt Dantoin (138) and Anthony Boldt (157) recorded pins. While Avrom Barr (140) recorded a major decision.
Gage Anderson, Dawson Sachse and Brock Sternitzky had forfeit wins for Rhinelander.
The Hodags are back in action Saturday at the Wausau East Invite.
