RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Jan. 20


Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 56, Shawano 55


The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team survived a furious comeback attempt by Shawano as a Jackson Nordin putback fell off the rim as time expired and the Hodags defeated Hawks 56-55 in Shawano.


Rhinelander led 51-39 with 5:48 remaining before Shawano came roaring back. The Hawks got within one on a steal and finish by Tristan Lawe and then another steal in with 15 seconds left set up a wild scramble where Greyson Swedberg missed a 3 before the Nordin miss.


Jatyn Barkus led Rhinelander with 23 points and Abe Gretzinger had 13. Will Verkuilen led Shawano with 19 points while Swedberg added 17.


Rhinelander (10-2, 5-1 Great Northern) travels to Medford on Thursday.


Girls’ basketball: Shawano 42, Rhinelander 38


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team dropped a close game Tuesday, falling at Shawano 42-38.


Wisconsin recruit Leah Nordin broke a 37-all tie with a pair of free throws with 1:14 left and then made a steal and transition layup to put the Hawks up four. 


The Hodags struggled offensively, going 11 of 39 from the field and 7 of 28 from 3, but rallied from an early 9-0 deficit to lead 15-14 at halftime and led 22-14 early in the second half before the Hawks rallied.


Aubryn Clark had 18 points to lead Rhinelander while Nordin had 15 for the Hawks.


Rhinelander (7-8, 4-3 Great Northern) travels to Medford Thursday.


Boys’ hockey: Rhinelander 3, Medford 2


The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team earned its first win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Medford 3-2 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena. 


The Hodags scored twice in the second period, including what proved to be the game winner by Drake Nelson at the 13:46 mark of the frame. The Hodags held on in the third after Ian Roiger scored 1:22 into the period to cut the lead to one.


Carson Plehn scored for Rhinelander win the first period and Carsen Zadnik added a second period goal for the Hodags, who outshot Medford 34-29 in the contest. Connor McGee made 27 saves in the win.

Rhinelander (1-15-0, 1-7-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Pacelli on Thursday.


Gymnastics: Rhinelander 120.15, Antigo 116.575


The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team edged Antigo 120.15-116.575 Tuesday night in a GNC Small dual in Antigo.


Emeline Hintz won the floor exercise (8.65) and the balance beam (7.55) as she won the individual all-around with a 31.65. Addison Fish was third in all-around (29.8), Marsadies Williams was fifth (29.1) and Alexis Smith took seventh in the all-around (28.55) after winning the vault (8.4).


Rhinelander (2-0 GNC Small) will be back in Antigo for an invite Jan. 31.


Girls’ wrestling: Rhinelander at GNC/WVC Challenge Match No. 3


The Rhinelander High School girls’ wrestling team went 4-6 in its matches on Tuesday in a GNC/WVC Challenge match in Tomahawk.


Cassidy Lindner won both of her matches at 120 pounds while Katie Hazelton was 2-1 at 132. Syklar Leitl and Nevaeh Anderson were winless at 147 and 152, respectively. 


Rhinelander will return to action Jan. 31 at the Marshfield Invite.
