RHS Sports recap: Friday, Jan. 16


Boys’ basketball: Mosinee 75, Rhinelander 61


Mosinee pulled away late in a battle of Great Northern Conference unbeatens, outscoring Rhinelander 19-6 over the final 5 1/2 minutes to defeat the Hodags 75-61 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. 


Six players scored in double figures for Mosinee, led by Brayden Reinke with 18 points. Carson Balgord had 13 and Treve Stoffel had 12.


Devon Feck scored 18 of his game-high 24 points in the first half for Rhinelander as the Hodags crawled back from an early 18-5 deficit to lead 38-33 at halftime. Abe Gretzinger added 15 points for Rhinelander. 


Mosinee (11-2, 7-0 Great Northern) moved a game and a half clear of Rhinelander (9-2, 5-1 Great Northern) with the win. 


The Hodags will be back in action Tuesday night at Shawano.


Girls’ basketball: Mosinee 54, Rhinelander 39


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team fell at Mosinee 54-39 on Friday. 


Rhinelander led 22-19 at the half, but Mosinee pulled away in the second half following a long field goal drought for the Hodags. 


Aubryn Clark and 17 points and Vivian Lamers added 10 for Rhinelander. Paetyn Jirschele scored 25 to lead Mosinee.


Rhinelander (7-7, 4-3 Great Northern) travels to Shawano on Tuesday.


Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 3rd/9, Appleton North Invite


The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team recorded seven top-five finishes on Friday and was third out of nine teams at the Appleton North Invite.


Dean Gillingham had a role in four of the top-five finishes. He was second individually in the 100-yard breaststroke and fifth in the 500 freestyle. He was also part of third-place swims in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. 


Kellen O’Malley was third in the 100 freestyle, Judson O’Malley was fourth in the 100 backstroke and Charlie Antonuk took fifth in the 100 butterfly.


The Hodags are back in action Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Shorewood Small School State Invite.
