Vilas County Lakes and Rivers Association 2025 Blue Heron Awards
The Vilas County Lakes and Rivers Association presented its 2025 Blue Heron Stewardship Award to two families: Brian and Jean Ciske of Broken Bow Lake and Fred and Stephanie Gruber of Irving Lake.
Fred and Stephanie Gruber accepted one of two Blue Heron Stewardship Awards presented by the Vilas County Lakes and Rivers Association. (Contributed photograph)The award recognizes lake property owners who demonstrate strong shoreline stewardship practices that reduce environmental impacts. The association issues the annual awards to highlight examples of lake‑friendly waterfront development and promote awareness of shoreland conservation.
The properties are evaluated on criteria in five areas that affect lake health: driveway and parking areas, structures and septic systems, yard and recreation areas, shoreline conditions and an overall lot assessment.
The Ciske property features a natural shoreline and a bog mat with pitcher plants and other native vegetation between the home and the lake. A small platform provides access for a boat and kayak. The Gruber property includes a wetland with wild calla and sedges extending from the house to the lake, offering habitat for wildlife, including swans.
The association expressed appreciation to both families for their stewardship and noted that their properties serve as examples of responsible lakefront management.
