Eagles co-op goes 1-2 at Culver Cup
The Northland Pines girls’ hockey co-op salvaged a win in its final game of the Culver Cup on Monday, to end the three-day tournament in Verona with a 1-2 record.
The Eagles — comprised of skaters from Northland Pines, Rhinelander, Lakeland, Antigo, Three Lakes, Hurley and Norway (Mich.) high schools — downed Viroqua 6-1 on Monday’s finale. That came after a 4-2 loss to Janesville Dec. 28 and a 6-0 loss to Wisconsin Valley Union in the Dec. 27 opener.
Pines scored four times in the third period against Viroqua to blow open what was a 2-1 game. Both of Rhinelander’s skaters on the roster scored in the contest. Junior Reese Retallick had the opening goal, which gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead after a period. Freshman Lena Chiamulera had the other, making it a 4-1 game in the third.
Northland Pines freshmen Mya Renkes and Ayla Shepherdson each scored twice in the game.
Shepherdson also scored twice for the Eagles in the Dec. 28 game against Janesville. The first goal gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the second period and the second tied the game at 2 less than two minutes into the third period. The Bluebirds retook the lead later in the third period and added an insurance goal in the final minute.
The Dec. 27 loss to Wisconsin Valley Union marked the Pines co-op’s second straight loss against its Wisconsin Valley Conference rival. WVU skated to a 3-1 win over Pines in Eagle River Dec. 22.
Shot and save details from the three games were unavailable as of press time.
The Eagles (2-6-1, 1-1-0 Wis. Valley) are back in action with a two-game homestand this weekend, beginning tonight against the Badger Lightning at the Eagle River Sports Arena, followed by a rematch with Viroqua Saturday afternoon which will be played at the Lakeland Ice Arena.
Sixth annual Hawgs and Dawgs football camp set for March 7 in Hodag Dome
Rhinelander football will host the sixth annual Hawgs and Dawgs football camp Saturday, March 7 at the Hodag Dome.
The camp, for middle and high school-aged players, has an additional session this year — a tackling camp for grades 7-12, which will run from 1:45 to 3:45 p.m. According to the Hawgs and Dawgs website, the session is “designed to teach athletes the fundamentals and techniques of safe, effective tackling in a competitive and supportive environment. The camp focuses on proper body positioning, footwork, leverage, angles of pursuit, and head-up tackling to maximize performance while reducing the risk of injury.”
It joins existing sessions for offensive and defensive linemen that will run from 8:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., a passing academy for offensive skill players that will run from 8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. and a perimeter camp for offensive skill position players, linebackers and defensive backs which will take place from 4 to 7 p.m.
Additionally, a youth camp for players in grades 1-6 will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
This year’s camp counselors and clinicians will be announced at a later date.
Registration for any of the sessions is $65 per player. However, those who register by Jan. 31 using the code “EARLYBIRD” at checkout will receive a discount.
