Gas prices hit lowest price on average in US since 2020
Pump prices, on average, were at their lowest since 2020 in the United States last month.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline fell below $3 on Dec. 1 for the first time since February of 2021.
The EIA said the lowered gas prices were due to the falling costs of crude oil, which makes up about half of the price consumers see at gas stations.
Gasoline prices, obviously, vary by region. The EIA said the lowest price for a gallon of regular gasoline recorded on Dec. 1 was $2.55 on the Gulf Coast and the highest was $4.03 on the West Coast.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average continued to drop as low as $2.89, which was the cheapest average since the end of 2020.
“Crude oil prices remain low, and despite an increase in gasoline demand over the holidays, supply is strong,” a Dec. 18 AAA press release says. “Overall, 2025 has been a stable year for the national average with few fluctuations and no sharp spikes.”
Low gas prices are a welcomed relief for consumers, especially after prices at the pumps hit record highs in June of 2022, topping a national average of $5 a gallon, as AAA reported.
According to AAA’s fuel prices map, the national average on Dec. 30 was $2.83.
Wisconsin’s gas price average on Dec. 30 was relatively cheaper compared to the rest of the country, coming in at $2.45 per gallon for regular gasoline and $3.37 per gallon for diesel.
Oneida County’s gas price average on Dec. 30, according to AAA, was $2.41. For Vilas County, the average on Dec. 30 was $2.50.
The state’s average gas price a year ago were $2.76 for regular gas, but less for diesel at $3.28.
