Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 47, Northland Pines 40
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team held off Northland Pines in a defensive struggle 47-0 in Eagle River on Friday night.
The Hodags led by as many as 10 points in the second half. The Eagles cut the lead to two on three separate occasions but were unable to draw any closer.
Devon Feck had 19 points to lead Rhinelander and bring him to within eight points of 1,000 for his career. Rowan Wiczek added 10 for the Hodags. Mylo Albrecht paced Pines with 18.
Rhinelander (16-2, 9-1 Great Northern) travels to Tomahawk on Tuesday.
Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 58, Northland Pines 40
The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team pulled away in the second half Friday night and defeated Northland Pines 58-40 in Eagle River.
The Hodags led by 10 at the break and used a 12-4 run to start the second half to pull away.
Vivian Lamers matched a season-high with 22 points to lead Rhinelander while Aubryn Clark and Teagan Clark scored 13 each. Ryley Darr paced Pines with 17 points and Natalie Kohn had 14.
Rhinelander (11-9, 7-4 Great Northern) travels to Tomahawk on Tuesday.
Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 1st/5, GNC Meet
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team claimed its eighth straight Great Northern Conference championship in convincing fashion on Friday, winning 10 of 11 events to win the conference meet in Minocqua.
Dean Gillingham, Judson O’Malley and Charlie Antonuk were each four-even winners for Rhinelander. Gillingham broke a conference record in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.62) and won the 200 freestyle, Judson O’Malley took the 50 and 100 freestyle and Antonuk won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
Kellen O’Malley added a win in the 200 individual medley. Daniel Meier, Elias Simonsen and Matthew Wood were a part of relay wins for the Hodags. Every member of the Hodag squad scored a top three finish and was all-conference in at least one event.
Rhinelander is back in action Feb. 14 in a WIAA Division 2 sectionals meet in Rice Lake.
Girls’ wrestling: Rhinelander 10th/13, GNC/WVC Meet
Rhinelander’s Cassidy Lindner made history Friday night as one of the 12 conference champions in the inaugural Great Northern/Wisconsin Valley Conference meet in Medford.
Lindner rolled in the 120-pound weight class, pinning her three opponents in the preliminary rounds before earning a technical fall over Marshfield’s Logan Boon in the championship match.
Skylar Leitl and Miranda Daab both went winless on the night and placed sixth at 152 and 235, respectively. As a team, the Hodags took 10th in the 13-team meet.
The Hodags are back in action Friday, Feb. 13 in a WIAA regional tournament in Merrill.
