RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Feb. 3
Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 63, Wisconsin Rapids 44
Devon Feck scored 28 points and the Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team pulled away from Wisconsin Rapids Tuesday night, defeating the Raiders 63-44 in non-conference play at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags spotted the Raiders an early eight-point lead by rallied to tie the game at 19 before pulling away to a 31-23 lead at the break. Feck missed only once from the field in the second half as he scored 17 after the break while Rhinelander’s lead ballooned to 20 by the halfway mark.
Jatyn Barkus added 10 points for Rhinelander while Zak Mancl led Wisconsin Rapids with 14 points. Brody Gilbertson, who came in averaging nearly 27 points per game was held to 13 for the Raiders on 3 of 10 shooting.
Rhinelander (15-2, 8-1 Great Northern) travels to Northland Pines on Friday.
Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 42, Wisconsin Rapids 26
The RHS girls’ basketball team jumped out to an early lead and it was enough in a defensive struggle as they defeating Wisconsin Rapids 42-26 on the road in non-conference play on Tuesday.
The Hodags scored the first 11 points of the game and led 20-2 at one point before taking a 24-7 lead to halftime.
Vivian Lamers had 16 points to lead Rhinelander while Aubryn Clark and Lexi Beran had nine points each. Leondra Denson had 10 points to lead the Raiders.
Rhinelander (10-9, 6-4 Great Northern) travels to Northland Pines on Friday.
Boys’ hockey: Lakeland 3, Rhinelander 1
Colton Berray had a goal and two assists, including the game-winning tally with 1:56 remaining as Lakeland defeated Rhinelander 3-1 Tuesday night in Minocqua.
The T-Birds tacked on an empty-net goal by Lawson Bain with 45 seconds left to account for the final margin. Carsen Zadnik put Rhinelander on the board 2:20 into the first period, Spencer Swedberg answered just more than a minute later and the two teams remained deadlocked until late in the third period.
Lakeland outshot Rhinelander 38-15 in the contest. Connor McGee made 35 saves in defeat.
Rhinelander (1-19-0, 1-9-0-0 Great Northern) travels to play Kingsford, Mich. on Thursday.
Girls’ wrestling: Rhinelander 8th/18, CWWWL Finale at Merrill
Cassidy Lindner won the 120-pound weight class for Rhinelander on Tuesday as the Hodag girls’ wrestling team took eighth of 18 in the Central Wisconsin Women’s Wrestling League Finale in Merrill.
Lindner pinned all three of her opponents en route to the title as she upped her record to 37-5 on the season. Skylar Leitl was third at 152 pounds and Miranda Daab was fifth at 235.
Rhinelander will compete in the inaugural Great Northern/Wisconsin Valley conference tournament Friday night in Medford.
