RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, April 28
Baseball: Rhinelander 10, Medford 6
The Rhinelander High School baseball team answered Medford’s five-spot in the fifth inning with one of its own in the sixth Tuesday as it remained unbeaten and rallied past the Raiders 10-6 in Medford.
The Hodags knocked down the door when Medford left it open, allowing Abe Gretzinger to reach on a two-out error that scored Charlie Johnson. After Jackson Waydick was hit by a pitch, Rowan Wiczek and Conner Rappley followed with back-to-back two-run hits to give Rhinelander the lead for good.
The Hodags used the long ball to build an early 5-1 lead. Weston Kibler hit a solo shot to lead off the third inning, Vince White hit a two-run shot in the fourth and Waydick added a solo homer in the fifth.
White picked in the win in relief for Rhinelander, not allowing a hit over the final 2 2/3 innings with four walks and four strikeouts. Waydick started and went 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
Rhinelander (7-0, 6-0 Great Northern) travels to Tomahawk on Thursday.
Softball: Medford 11, Rhinelander 1
The Rhinelander High School softball team struggled to hit against Medford pitcher Rylee Hraby in their GNC conference game at the Hodag Dome on April 28. Hraby dished out 15 strikeouts and allowed only one hit.
The Hodags gave up five runs in the top of the sixth to end the game early after they put up another zero in the bottom half. Chase Verbist tallied the only hit for Rhinelander, and it came in the bottom of the sixth.
Aleece Johnson pitched 5 1/3 innings, with Kendall Vanney relieving her in the sixth. Johnson struck out four, gave up seven earned runs on 14 hits and two walks.
Back down to .500, Rhinelander (8-8, 4-4 Great Northern) will play in Tomahawk on Thursday.
Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 4, Medford 1
After dropping two straight non-conference games to competitive competition in Menomonee Falls over the weekend, the Rhinelander High School girls' soccer team is back in the win column after traveling to Medford and defeating the Red Raiders on Tuesday April 28.
The Hodags were up 1-0 at half on a goal from Jordan Manske in the 18th minute when she was assisted by Gabby Wanta. Wanta also scored the first goal of the second half at the 47:42 mark, with two more coming from Vivian Lamers via a PK in the 56th and an unassisted goal in the 80th.
Rhinelander (6-3-0, 5-1-0-0 Great Northern) is scheduled to travel to Mosinee on Thursday before returning to Mike Webster on Friday to face Hayward.
Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 4, Lakeland 3
The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team ousted Lakeland 4-3 at Lakeland Union High School on Tuesday. All four singles flights won, and all three doubles flights lost. Every outcome was in straight sets.
No. 1 singles was handled by Asher Rivord as he took down Lakeland's Adam Roska 6-1 and 6-3. Calvin Loomis beat Avery DeVries 6-0 and 6-0 in the No. 2 doubles flight. The same outcome came for No. 3 singles Aidan Lueder, when he beat Will Walden. The No. 4 singles flight was forfeited in favor of Rhinelander's Mark Currie.
Lakeland swept the doubles flights against Danek Koniar/Henry Bonardelli, Brayden Barnhill/Owen Evers, and Kellen O'Malley/Sam Loomis, but ultimately came up short in the overall outcome of the match.
The Hodags (7-3, 2-0 Great Northern) will travel to the Wausau West Invite this weekend.
Track: RHS girls 1st/3, boys 2nd/3, Oneida County Triangular
The Rhinelander High School girls’ track team won a whopping 11 events as they won the girls’ portion of the Oneida County Triangular Tuesday at Mike Webster Stadium. The Hodag boys had three wins and finished second to Lakeland, which was also presented the overall title.
Individually, Libbey Buchmann took both the shot put and discus for the Hodags. Violet Biolo won the 100, Aila Bergman claimed the 200, Millie Gruett won the 400, Marsadies Williams took the 300 hurdles, Macy Myers won the pole vault and Taylor Dahlquist claimed the long jump. The Hodags also won the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays.
Avrom Barr was victorious in the 800 for Rhinelander and as part of the 4x400 relay with Dean Gillingham, Jackson Weinzatl and Matthew Haselton. Ayden Myers claimed the pole vault.
The Hodags will be back in action Friday in Kaukauna.
Golf: RHS 2nd/8, GNC Meet No. 2
The Rhinelander High School golf team shot 333 Tuesday and claimed another runner-up finish in the second round of the Great Northern Conference golf tournament at Inshalla Country Club in Tomahawk.
Chase West finished tied four fourth on the day with a 9-over round of 79, leading the Hodag charge. Blake Petroff shot 81 to finish in a tie for seventh and also earned conference points. Grant Gremban shot 86, Hank Kowieski had an 87 and Dylan Shefveland shot 93.
The Hodags are right back in action Wednesday morning in Day 1 of the Minnesota Border Battle at Saint Croix National in Somerset.
