Man cited in Woodboro crash earlier this month at large from authorities
Freezing rain that coated Oneida County the morning of April 2 made for treacherous road conditions — and in the case of one crash that day — the alleged perpetrator has also proven slippery.
StewartA three-vehicle accident at 9:32 a.m. that day closed the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 8 at Memorial Forest Road in Woodboro for nearly an hour. According to the Wisconsin State Patrol-North Central Region’s crash report, the black Honda Civic owned by Chelsea Greil of Tomahawk and driven by Marques Anthony Stewart of Milwaukee lost control when passing the Chevrolet Silverado light truck driven by Patrick Murphy, collided with the Silverado’s snow plow, slid into the oncoming lane and struck the Toyota Sienna XLE passenger van driven by John Hagen head-on. Stewart, the Civic’s only occupant, was transported by the Aspirus Medivac Ambulance to the Aspirus Wausau Hospital emergency room.
In addition to traffic citations for operating while under the influence, driving too fast for conditions, unsafe cutting in when passing, and operating while suspended, Stewart was arrested and charged with one count of THC (second and subsequent offense), one count of felony bail jumping, and one count of misdemeanor bail jumping. The charges carry total fines of up to $30,000 and/or up to 9 years and 3 months in prison. He also has two open felony cases in Fond du Lac County and Lincoln County, and an open misdemeanor case in Dane County.
Provided with a custodial release form, Stewart was advised he must turn himself into the Oneida County Jail after his release from the hospital. According to the Sheriff’s Deputy’s report, he arrived on April 14, wheelchair-bound due to his injuries. Before the booking process could be completed, though, Stewart urinated on the floor, and was then taken by ambulance to Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital for a possible overdose. He was advised to return to complete the booking when he was released from the hospital and sober.
On April 15, he was not at an Elizabeth Street address in Rhinelander. A pick-up for booking was also attempted at Greil’s Tomahawk address, but he wasn’t there, either.
An arrest warrant was issued by Oneida Circuit Court judge Mary Sowinski on April 16.
“We’re still actively looking for him. He’s not in custody,” Oneida County Sheriff Grady Hartman told the River News April 22. “There are some other addresses in other counties, and that’s part of the problem: we’re relying on the other counties to pick him up for us.”
Noting that Stewart will still be healing from his injuries, Hartman added, “I know a good place where he could recuperate — right in the county jail.”
