RHS Sports recap: Thursday, April 23


Baseball: Rhinelander 25, Lakeland 4


The Rhinelander High School baseball team thundered past Lakeland 25-4 in five innings on Thursday in Minocqua. 


The Hodags batted around the order in the first two innings, scoring three runs in the first, five in the second and third, 10 in the fourth, and two in the fifth. Conner Rappley and Josh Willoughby both had home runs in the blowout, with the rest of the lineup pelting the ball around the yard the whole night. The Hodags had 21 hits total. 


Rappley started the night on the mound, with Vince White and Abe Gretzinger throwing to a few batters as well. They allowed one hit the entire game. 


Still undefeated on the year, Rhinelander (6-0, 5-0 Great Northern) will play a non-conference game at home against Crandon.


Softball: Lakeland 10, Rhinelander 5


A late comeback ran out of steam as the Rhinelander High School softball team fell to Lakeland 10-5 Thursday at the Hough Family Softball Complex. 


The Hodags trailed 8-0 following a seven-run third for Lakeland, but got back within five thanks to a three-run sixth keyed by Kalyn Miller’s first career home run. 


Kadyn Taylor had two hits and two RBIs for the Hodags. Miller also went 2 for 4 with two RBIs as Rhinelander outhit Lakeland 11-10 in the contest. 


Aleece Johnson took the loss, giving up five runs over 6 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts. Kendall Vanney, making her first appearance in nearly three weeks, gave up five runs, all unearned, with three walks in the over one third of an inning. The lone hit she allowed was a Marlee Strasburg grand slam in the third.


Rhinelander (8-7, 4-3 Great Northern) hosts Medford on Tuesday.


Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 14, Antigo 0


The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team dominated Antigo Thursday night, defeating the Red Robins 14-0 at Mike Webster Stadium. 


Rhinelander scored seven goals in the first 20 minutes of the first half and then scored another seven in the first 16 of the second half before the game reached the goal-rule time threshold at the 60th minute. 


Ella Miljevich and Vivian Lamers each scored for times in the contest, and Miljevich added three assists. Jordan Manske scored twice and the Hodags also had goals from Hayley Schiek, Ella Heck, Gabby Wanta and Kiley Pooch. 


Shots were 39-1 in favor of Rhinelander. Keeper Rylee Mickevicius stopped the only shot on goal she faced in the match. 


Rhinelander (5-1-0, 4-1-0-0 Great Northern) plays at Menomonee Falls Friday night.
