RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, April 21
Baseball: Rhinelander 9, Marathon 0
Charlie Johnson pitched a complete-game shutout and hit a key three-run double as the Rhinelander High School baseball team broke things open late and defeated Marathon 9-0 on the road Tuesday in non-conference play.
Scoreless going to the sixth inning, Johnson’s bases-clearing double capped off a five-run frame for the Hodags, who scored four more times in the seventh. Sawyer Bishop delivered a key three-run double with two out in that inning.
Johnson scattered four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four in his first career varsity pitching start. Rhinelander outhit Marathon 7-4, with Bishop collecting two hits.
The Hodags (5-0, 4-0 Great Northern) travel to Lakeland on Thursday.
Softball: Mosinee 19, Rhinelander 0
The Rhinelander High School softball team was defeated by Mosinee 19-0 Tuesday at Mosinee Boulevard Turf Field.
Mosinee scored five runs in the first two innings to jump out quickly to a 10-0 lead. They continued to hold the Hodags scoreless and piled on three more in the third and six in the fourth.
The Hodags struggled at the plate, as Ava Busse and Pacyn Stoffel combined for a five-inning perfect game, striking out nine.
Aleece Johnson pitched the four innings of defense for Rhinelander, walking three and striking out two while the Indians collected 18 hits.
Rhinelander (8-6, 4-2 Great Northern) will play Lakeland at the Haug Family Softball Complex on Thursday.
Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 1, Merrill 0
Kiley Pooch scored in the 68th minute and the Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team fended off a pesky Merrill side 1-0 Tuesday night in Merrill.
The Hodags controlled the game, outshooting Merrill 35-4 overall, and 22-4 in shots on goal, but needed Pooch to finish a cross from Ella Miljevich with roughly 12 minutes remaining to keep from going to a penalty kick shootout.
Rylee Mickevicius made two saves in the shutout for Rhinelander.
The Hodags (4-1-0, 3-1-0-0 Great Northern) host Antigo on Thursday.
Boys' Tennis: Rhinelander 7, Ashland 0
The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team took care of business against Ashland Tuesday, defeating the Oredockers 7-0 at the RHS tennis courts.
Asher Rivord capped off the night with a tiebreaking win over Ashland's Adrian Erickson at No. 1 singles. He battled back after Erickson won the first set 6-2 by reversing the score in the second set in his favor and going on to win the tiebreaker 10-4.
Straight set wins came from the remaining three singles for Rhinelander in Calvin Loomis (No. 2), Aidan Leuder (No. 3), and Brayden Barnhill (No. 4).
No .1 doubles action from the Henry Bonardelli and Danek Koniar duo won 6-1 and 6-0. Kellen O'Malley and Sam Loomis didn't stray from the straight set theme either, the No. 2 doubles team won 6-0 and 6-1.
The boys' tennis team will resume action at the De Pere Invite this weekend.
Track: RHS girls 2nd/8, boys 4th/8, Wausau West Invite
The Rhinelander High School girls’ track team finished second and the Hodag boys came home fourth on Tuesday in the Wausau West Outdoor Opener in Wausau.
The Hodag girls won six events, led by Libbey Buchmann, who bettered her school record in the discus once again with a winning toss of 136 feet, 9 inches. Aila Bergman doubled up on wins in the long and triple jump, Lucy Eddy claimed the 400 meters, Marsadies Williams won the 300 hurdles and Macy Meyers took the 800-meter run.
Jackson Weinzatl won the 3,200 meters for the the Hodag boys and was on the winning 4x800 team with Dean Gillingham, Jonathan Campbell and Avrom Barr. Ayden Myers took the pole vault and the Hodags were victorious in the 4x100 relay with Ben Olson, Sam Zwaard, Evan Shoeder and Landon Catlin.
Rhinelander returns to action Friday, taking part in the Northland Pines Eagle Relays.
