RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, April 14
Baseball: Rhinelander 7, Northland Pines 2
The Rhinelander High School baseball team had a solid home opener against Northland Pines on Tuesday. They defeated the Eagles 7-2 at Hodag Park.
The Hodags started the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the third, before Northland Pines answered with one in the top of the fourth. After the third, Rhinelander scored twice in the fourth and sixth, and once in the fifth. Northland Pines was only able to answer with one in the top of the seventh.
Vince White was 1-for-2 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, while Conner Rappley was 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the third. Rowan Wiczek had a double that drove in two in the sixth inning.
The Hodags committed no errors in their first game at Hodag Park, and were led by pitcher Jackson Waydick on the bump. He had eight strikeouts, one walk, and gave up three hits. Wiczek relieved Waydick in the seventh, allowing a home run to Brody Hoeft, but striking out three Eagles to end the game.
Rhinelander (2-0, 2-0 Great Northern) is scheduled to host Merrill on Thursday.
Track & Field: RHS boys 1st/11, girls 1st/11, Hodag Hybrid
The Rhinelander High School boys’ and girls track teams shined at first home meet of the year. The teams raced up 11 wins between them as they swept both division of the Hodag Hybrid meet held at Mike Webster Stadium and the Hodag Dome.
The Hodag boys got wins from Amos Bergman in the 110-meter hurdles, Cyrus Leisure in the 200, Ayden Myers in the pole vault, Cade Goffe in the triple jump and the 4x200-meter relay team of Leisure, Ben Olson, Evan Shoeder and Matthew Haselton.
On the girls’ side, Jayln Zadnik and Libbey Buchmann went 1-2 in shot put and Buchmann won the discus. Macy Myers won the pole vault and the Hodags claimed wins in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
The Hodags are back in action Friday at Marathon.
Boys’ tennis: Marshfield 5, Rhinelander 1
The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team dropped a non-conference dual at Marshfield 5-1 on Tuesday.
Rhinelander’s lone win came at No. 3 doubles with Kellen O’Malley and Sam Loomis. The Hodags dropped a match tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles with Danek Koniar and Henry Bonardelli and Asher Rivord was in a match tiebreaker at No. 1 singles when rain forced the stoppage of the dual.
Rhinelander (1-1, 0-0 Great Northern) opens conference play Thursday at Medford.
Boys’ golf: Rhinelander 22nd/31, Randolph Invite
The Rhinelander High School boys’ golf team wrapped-up play at the two-day Randolph Invite in Wisconsin Dells with a round of 335 on Tuesday. The Hodags shot 678 overall and placed 22nd in the 36-hole event.
Blake Petroff and Hank Kowieski each shot 82 to lead the Hodags in Tuesday’s round. Chase West carded an 83, Grant Gremban shot 88 and Dylan Shefveland carded a 90. Kowieski was the best finisher overall for the Hodgas, placing 61st with a two-day total of 165.
The Hodags will be back in Wisconsin Dells Thursday and Friday for a 36-hole meet hosted by Mosinee.
