RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Sept. 25


Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander T3rd/9, GNC Meet


The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team had four all-conference finishes at it tied for third on the day Thursday at it hosted the Great Northern Conference tournament. The Hodags tied for third overall in the GNC with Medford. 


Eva Heck/Willow VanDenHeuvel and Willow Mutter/Addy Currie were runners up at Nos. 2 and 3 double while Rhinelander earned third-place finishes with Taylor McKinney and Lucy Evers at Nos. 3 and 4 singles. 


Rhinelander and Medford entered the day tied for first in the GNC, but both were leapfrogged by Wausau Newman and Pacelli. Newman won four flights on the day and earned the conference title by five points over Pacelli. 


Rhinelander will close out regular season dual-meet play with a non-conference match at home against Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday.


Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 0, Waupaca 0


The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team played Waupaca to a scoreless draw in non-conference play on the road Thursday.


Goalkeeper Eric Parish was credited unofficially with seven saves in the draw. Other statistics were not available as of the time of this post. 


Rhinelander (0-9-2, 0-5-1-0 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.


Cross country: RHS boys 1st/10, girls 2nd/4, Three Lakes Invite


The RHS boys’ cross country team placed three runners in the top 10 and edged Lakeland for the title of the Three Lakes Invite Thursday at Big Stone Golf Course. 


Avrom Barr was the runner-up int he boys’ race, covering the 5K course in 17 minutes, 18.9 seconds. Jackson Weinzatl was eighth and Jonathan Campbell finished 10th to also earn spots on the podium for the Hodags. Grant Gremban (16th) and Michael Brunette (17th) rounded out the top five for the squad. 


Macy Myers was the runner-up on the girls’ side as the Hodags took second out of four qualifying teams in that division. Myers posted a time of 21:15.0. Kara Monk also medalled for the Hodags, finishing fifth. Noelle Mayo took 15th, Gabby Wanta was 19th and Emily Schiek was 30th for the squad. 


The Hodags return to action Oct. 2 at the Medford Invite.
