Lady Hodag golfers compete in Burlington’s ‘Ryder Cup’
The Rhinelander High School girls’ golf team traveled downstate Monday for a team-style event. Monday’s competition in Burlington was dubbed the Browns Lake Ryder Cup, though the format was a bit different than the actual Ryder Cup that will be contested this weekend between the United States and Europe on Long Island.
The Hodags played a two-player, nine-hole scramble in the Monday’s morning session, falling to Burlington 134-157. In the afternoon, the Hodags shot 172 in a nine-hole round that consisted of three different team formats as it finished seventh among the seven schools in the field.
“It was good to get it in to play. You know, we got to play a nine-hole scramble in the morning to kind of see the course. And then the afternoon, they set us up for their Ryder Cup, which is the fun format. Three-hole scramble, three-hole best ball, three holes alternate shot,” coach Adam Schmidt said.
Seniors Nevaeh Anderson and Claire Yunkers fared the best in Monday’s afternoon session, shooting 45 to tie for third among the 21 two-player teams.
Karlie Yunkers and Lindsey Hoerchler shot 62 in the afternoon session while Ella Miljevich and Hayley Schiek shot 65.
“Lindsey had some really good shots. Nevaeh hit a couple of greens,” Schmidt noted. “Overall, all the kids actually hit some really nice shots. We talked about just how they improved and how much they've improved over the last couple weeks. And they all agreed.”
The Hodags were back home Thursday for one final regular season match, hosting Amherst in a dual meet at Northwood Golf Club. The team will travel to the outskirts of Green Bay this coming Wednesday for a WIAA Division 1 regional hosted by Green Bay Preble at Brown County Golf Course.
“Definitely their confidence is up, so hopefully they're going to play good there,” Schmidt said.
