Anderson takes medalist honors in Wausau dual

Nevaeh Anderson shot 46 Thursday to take medalist honors, but it was not enough as the Rhinelander High School girls’ golf team dropped a dual meet to Wausau East/West by 40 strokes at Trapp River Golf Course.

Anderson came away with the individual win despite some struggles on the putting surfaces. Coach Adam Schmidt said the senior was hitting the ball well, tee to green.

“She put together a good round. She really struggled with putting. She had 26 putts, so she had more putts than she did the rest of the strokes. She struggled with putting, but she hit seven greens today, so that was pretty awesome,” he said.

The Hodags shot 252 as a team. Ella Miljevich shot 64 on the day, Hayley Schiek had a 67 and Lindsey Hoerchler shot 73.

“Hayley got off the tee really well. She struggle with putting too. Kind of the story of our team —struggles with putting,” Schmidt noted. “Lindsey actually had 21 putts. Lindsey actually putted really well today. I saw Ella on a couple of holes. She said she only hit one green, but I think she had more than that because I saw on hole two, she had a big drive down the left side and then like had like 40 yards into the green and chipped it on into like eight feet. Then two putted for par, so that was cool.”

Thursday’s match took place just 13 days before regionals. Schmidt said he continues to see improvement from his squad as the postseason nears. 

“They’re really improving a lot with their swings, their full swings,” he said. “You can tell the girls are definitely getting better. You know, they’re all starting to hit the ball a lot better. We’ve just got to focus more on short game.”

Rhinelander traveled to Burlington on Monday to play a Ryder Cup-style event that included a mix of scramble, best ball and alternate shot formats. The Hodags will play one more regular season match Thursday when they host Amherst for a dual meet at Northwood Golf Club.
