RHS Sports recap: Friday, Sept. 19

Football: Tomahawk 49, Rhinelander 7

The Rhinelander High School football team had no answers for the No. 5 team in Division 5, falling at home to the Tomahawk Hatchets 49-7 Friday at Mike Webster Stadium.

The Hatchets had the lead before their first offensive possession on a Jonah Dickens 72-yard interception return and never looked back, leading 13-0 after the first quarter and 35-7 at halftime. Rhinelander’s score was a 38-yard fumble return by Ryley Hull.

The Hatchets racked up 396 yards of offense. Quarterback Cash Olsen threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 68 yards and two scores.

Cyrus Leisure had 73 yards on seven carries but was rested most of the second half with the game out of reach. Abe Gretzinger was sacked seven times in the loss. He was 11 of 18 passing for 73 yards and an interception.

Rhinelander (2-3, 1-2 Great Northern) hosts Antigo in the 91st Bell Game next Friday.

Volleyball: Rhinelander at Medford, ppd.

The RHS volleyball team was scheduled to play a GNC match at Medford on Friday, but that event was postponed to Thursday, Oct. 2.

Medford had planned to stage Friday’s game outdoors, setting up a temporary court on its football field, however the plan was scrapped with rain in the forecast. The teams will play indoors when the match is made up Oct. 2.

Rhinelander is back in action Tuesday, facing GNC-leading Mosinee on the road.

A full report will be published in Tuesday’s River News.
