Hodag volleyball drops two matches in Prentice

The struggles continued for the Rhinelander High School volleyball team Thursday night in a non-conference triangular at Prentice.

The Hodags were swept in straight sets by Lakeland and Prentice extending the team’s losing streak to six matches.

Rhinelander started with GNC rival Lakeland and lost 25-14, 25-9. Prentice then swept the Hodags, 25-9, 25-17.

“Long volleys, but terrible losses,” Hodag coach Jayme Wyss told the River News via text after the event. “We just have nobody to put the ball away. We get long stretches of making way too many mistakes.”

Junior Ava Rathbun led the Hodags with seven kills on the night, including five in the Prentice match. She also recorded a team-high 17 digs on the night. Olivia Ruetz had five kills while freshman Maddie Paulson had four kills, including a team-high three putaways against Lakeland.

Kayla Skubal had double-digit digs for Rhinelander, finishing with 10 in the night while Tori Stella and Kenzie Paulson each had eight digs. Freshman Kylie Treder had nine assists. Ruetz and Corynn Waksmonski each had a block kill for the Hodags and Rathbun had the team’s lone service ace.

Rhinelander (1-13, 0-2 Great Northern) traveled to Wautoma Saturday for an invite. Visit RiverNewsOnline.com for a brief recap of that event and read a full report in the Friday, Sept. 19 edition of the River News.

The Hodags will take on Lakeland again tonight in a GNC match at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium and will then host Amherst and Prentice in a non-conference triangular on Thursday.
