RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Sept. 13
Correction: A previous version of this post transposed the results for the RHS girls' swim team in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Brookfield East Invite. Ella Heck finished fifth and Vivian Lamers was sixth. The story has been corrected below.
Boys’ soccer: Shawano 7, Rhinelander 0
The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team lost to Shawano 7-0 at home Saturday. The Hodags trailed 3-0 at halftime and gave up for more goals in the second half.
Statistics from the contest were unavailable as of the time of this post.
Rhinelander (0-6-1, 0-2-1-0 Great Northern) hosts Merrill on Tuesday.
Volleyball: Rhinelander 0-5, Wautoma Invite
The RHS volleyball team dropped all five of its matches as it finished last in the eight-team Wautoma Invite on Saturday.
Rhinelander was beaten in straight sets in all three of its pool-play matches, falling to Lomira 25-20, 25-17; Montello 25-18, 25-16 and Three Lakes 25-15, 25-18. Rhinelander lost in three sets to Wautoma in the consolation bracket 25-20, 16-25, 15-5 before losing to Rosholt 25-11, 25-16.
Ava Rathbun had 13 kills and 18 digs on the day for the Hodags, but left during the Wautoma match with an ankle injury and did not return. Olivia Ruetz led the team with 16 kills and eight blocks, Tori Stella had 34 digs and five aces, Kylie Treder had 34 assists, and Cassidy Lindner added five aces.
Rhinelander (1-16, 0-2 Great Northern) hosts Lakeland on Tuesday.
Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 9th/12, Brookfield East Invite
The RHS girls’ swim team recorded five top-10 finishes as it placed ninth out of 12-teams in the Brookfield East Invite, which feature many of the state’s top programs in Division 1.
Ella Heck was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke, recording Rhinladner's top individual finish. Vivian Lamers was sixth in the breaststroke and 10th in the 50 freestyle. Rhinelander took seventh place with its 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams. Lamers, Heck and Kiley Pooch were on both of those relays, joined by Millie Gruett in the medley and June Chiamulera in the freestyle.
The Hodags return home Thursday to take on Lakeland in GNC play.
Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 4, New Richmond 3
The RHS girls’ tennis team secured a pair of match tiebreakers Saturday as it defeated New Richmond 4-3 in the final day of the Wausau Invite at D.C. Everest.
After dropping the second set, 0-6, Jordan Manske rallied to take the tiebreaker 13-11 to secure a win at No. 2 doubles. Willow Mutter and Addy Currie added a tiebreak win at No. 3 doubles and the Hodags got straight set wins from Taylor McKinney and Sam Aschenbrenner at Nos. 3 and 4 singles.
Rhinelander (15-8, 5-1 Great Northern) finished 3-1 in the two-day tournament and will travel to Marshfield Columbus on Tuesday.
Cross country: RHS boys 8th/13, girls 15th/16 Stevens Point Invite
The RHS boys’ cross country team was tops in the small school division and placed eighth overall out of 13 qualifying teams in the 19-school Stevens Point Invite on Saturday.
Avrom Barr paced the Hodag boys, finishing eighth overall in a field of 107 runners, covering the 5-kilometer course in a time of 16 minutes, 53.7 seconds. Michael Brunette (47th), Jackson Weinzatl (74th), Grant Gremban (74th) and Matthew Wood (76th) rounded out the team’s scorers.
The Hodags girls, down three starters due to injury, were 15th out of 16 qualifying teams on the girls side. Macy Myers paced the squad, finishing 19th (20:59.8). Kara Monk finished 50th, Grace Cornelius was 115th, Morgan Cahee was 118th and Emily Schiek finished 120th.
Rhinelander will be back in action next Saturday at the Bill Smiley Invitational in Wausau.
