RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Sept. 11


Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 0 (5), Medford 0 (3)


The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team picked up its first non-losing result of the season on Thursday as it played Medford to a 0-0 draw and defeated the Raiders in penalty kicks 5-3 for an extra conference point in Medford.


Owen Evers, Aiden Lueder, Dean Gillingham, Landon Catlin and Asher Rivord all converted for Rhinelander in the shootout, and the Hodags got some breathing room when Medford’s second shooter, Beck Mayrer, tugged his chance wide right. 


Medford held a 14-10 edge in total shots with both teams registering two shots on goal. Caden Ehrhardt stopped both shots he faced for his first shutout of the season. 


Rhinelander (0-5-1, 0-2-1-0 Great Northern) will host Shawano Saturday at Mike Webster Stadium.


Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 6, Merrill 1


The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team picked up another conference win on Thursday, knocking off Merrill 6-1 at the RHS tennis courts. 


The Hodags swept doubles with straight set wins by Maddie Legrey/Teagan Turcotte, Eva Heck/Willow VanDenHeuvel and Willow Mutter/Addy Currie. Jordan Manske, Taylor McKinney and Lucy Evers scored wins at Nos. 2-4 singles for the Hodags. 


Rhinelander (12-7, 5-1 Great Northern) travels to Wausau for a two-day invite beginning Friday.


Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 128, Tomahawk 38; Rhinelander 126, Colby/Abbotsford 43


The RHS girls’ swim team won all 11 events Thursday as it swept a GNC double dual in Tomahawk, defeating the Hatchets 128-38 and Colby/Abbotsford 126-43. 


Nine different Hodags were part of at least one win on the night. Ella Heck claimed the 50- and 500-yard freestyle and was on a pair of winning relays as Rhinelander’s only four-event winner on the night. Vivian Lamers took the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Rylee Mickevicius won the 200 individual medley, June Chiamulera took the 100 butterfly, Emma Houg won the 100 freestyle and Millie Gruett claimed the 100 breaststroke. 


Rhinelander (5-0, 4-0 Great Northern) travels to Brookfield for an invite Saturday.


Volleyball: Rhinelander 0-2, Prentice Invite


The Rhinelander High School volleyball team lost both of its matches in a non-conference invite at Prentice on Thursday, falling to Lakeland 25-14, 25-9 and Prentice 25-9, 25-17. 


Ava Rathbun led the Hodags with seven kills and 17 digs, Olivia Ruetz added five kills, Kayla Skubal had 10 digs and Kylie Treder had nine assists.


Rhinelander (1-13, 0-2 Great Northern) travels to Wautoma Saturday for an invite.
